Question about Toshiba SD-2800 DVD Player

Loud clunking when loading & playing....

My Toshiba SD-2800 player experiences a loud clunking when loading & playing discs. The disk will play, but the background noise drowns out some sound & I'm concerned that something will damage the discs. The noise is worst when it checks for a disc & it's empty. Since the player was manufactured on Feb. 2002, should I just buy a new one or have it serviced?

I am having the same problem butmy cd's are skipping also and sometimes about half way thru just no sounds at all. I have not used it for a DVD lately but would guess it would do the same. Wouldn't think it would be worth fixing as they are so cheap now. I have seldom even used this one. Maybe 50 times since 03. Use this one mainly for CD's and have it hooked to seperate speakers but everything else hooked to that works fine so it is the Toshiba.

Same problem. Took mine apart, and it appears that shaft of the motor that spins the CD/DVD has gotten wobbly - probably due to a worn bearing. This would explain

Not worth fixing - even if you could find a replacement motor. DVD players are so cheap and feature-rich now, that it would not be worth the time and money to replace just the motor.

I would not continue to use the player in this condition. I noticed some white dust around the rim of the tray when it is open - that tells me that the DVD is scraping on the tray. There is a serious risk of damaging your media. And considering that you can get a brand-new DVD player for the price of 2-3 DVDs...

Make sure you are using the right disk IE, DVD-R or DVD+R. Most Newer DVD player's will play DVD-R but very few play DVD+R

Toshiba DVD SD-3980SU2 or SC2 player loads every disc as "bad disc"

Toshiba says:
Information for Owners of Toshiba SD-3980 and SD-K750 DVD Players spacer.gif To ensure the satisfaction of our customers and to maintain the integrity and quality of our products, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. is issuing an important product update. This is not a safety issue.
Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that certain DVD players bearing the model numbers SD-3980 and SD-K750 may at some point in their life stop playing discs due to a component part failure. In such case, the error message "bad" will be shown on the unit's display. Affected units will have "SU2" at the end of the model name (e.g., SD-3980-SU2), which can be found on the back of the unit.
If you own either of these models and experience the issue described above, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-631-3811 for information on how to obtain a replacement unit.

Having the same problem. DVD player loads enough to identify it is a DVD or a CD, but won't actually start playing anything.

I've had the same symptoms on the last two Sony DVD's that I've rented. I managed to get around this by hitting one of the menu buttons after the loading message stopped.

Cd's are ok but no dvd's...

Had similar problem. Found the disk was not rotating. Adjusted the torque on the hold down screws of the drive unit allowed the disk to spin. Still had some motor noise, but DVD would load.

If the disk is not dirty, smudged up or scratched -- it is likely the laser pickup getting weak or the spindle motor not keeping at the right speed. If you have to clean the disc, wipe from the center out with a clean soft cloth.

Toshiba SD-43HK Discs failing to load.

Sorry not a solution but experienced the same problem. The problem started off the same as you described by now my player won't play DVDs at all. Seems that the laser is faulty and it is cost prohibitive to repair (it's sold as a complete module which would be around £100). I've been advised to replace it :-(
