You aren't using the correct install disk . The generic XP install disk can't recognize a SATA disk.You will have to load the appropriate driver during install. Here it is ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32001-32500/sp32492.exe
Or you could create a custom install disk as explained here

make sure that XP didnt turn off the USB in the BIOS... if you need assistants on reinabling it respond to this

SOURCE: not recognizing hard disc drive
hp nx7400 model ,can't update the bios form F.08 to F.0E. My orginal hard disk is total dead,no any data can get from it, i buy a new hd (160 gb) ,but it can't detect,so i need to upgrade the bios.
please tell me the solution
