My Western Digital 500 GB My Book Studio Edition External Hard Drive was working fine and all of a sudden my system (XP) couldn't recognize it. I tried with my laptop and even with the laptop at work, both XP and they couldn't recognize the device either... I am afraid I LOST ALL MY DATA... I guess an external HD is not as save as we all think....

When I try to boot up, I hear no scratchy sound that it is working and nothing shows on the screen; seems like it doesn't even recognize that is hooked up; also the light keeps flashing and yet the power cord shows green. Help!
I hope I haven't lost all my photos and data!

My book 500gb was working fine yesterday. Plugged it in today, power shows that it is getting to the device but is not showing up as being connected to my laptop or desktop computers. Have tried a new lead from the device to the computers and no fix. Tried the suggestion under disc management. didn't assist at all. Please help!!

My WD 500gb hard drive does the same thing. It gets power. It just won't initialize. I can see it in Disk Manager, but it says the drive is not initialized, and when i try to initialize it, it comes back with an error. Other services, like GParted, and the western digital hard drive diagnostic tools cant even see the drive. :( I'm sorry I ever bought this drive, especially since I see that lot's of other people have this problem.

I bought this drive and it runs but cannot be accessed. I have had it for 3 months and worked fine know that button will not light up and the thing will not shut down. Major disappointment since I have pictures on the drive and they cannot be accessed, BUYER BEWARE, SERVICE PEOPLE ARE DUMB for the help end.

Try to right click on "My Computer"->Manage-> Disk Mng.
Then try to see if you can recognize you this disk.
maybe you just need to change the letter or format it.

My toshiba l655powers on using the dc cable and battery, but will not display anything. I can hear it boot, but nothing shows. I have hooked it up to a tv using a hdmi cable, but it shows no signal.

Please use the VGA port (VGA external monitor), also please do these:
1. Unplug the AC adapter,
2. Remove the battery,
3. Remove the hard drive,
4. Press the power button and hold it for 15 seconds,
5. Plug in the AC adapter,
Restart the laptop.

If the problem persist,
Note: Do not insert the battery, and do not install the hard drive.
1. Unplug the AC adapter
2. Reseat the memory (remove it and reinstall it),
3. Plug in the AC adapter,
Restart the laptop.

If those actions do not solve the problem, then your GPU/motherboard is dying.

Try checking your connections. Make sure the usb cable is firmly in the hard drive as well as the pc. Unplug the hard drive, restart the computer and plug it back in. If that does not work I would suggest trying some sort of file recovery/back up software and then calling in the warranty.

depending on a few things
do you hear the drive powering up? like the platters inside are spinning? if so you know that the power to the hard drive is working and the data may be the problem you would want to try new usb cables if those do not work then it would probably be a bad usb port on the hard drive
if you don't hear the platters inside the hard drive spinning up when you plug it in then it sounds like the power is bad on the hard drive or the hard drives cables i would try a new cable first and then if that does not work try contacting WD about a warranty on your hard drive here is a link to WD support page for warranty

hope this helps

Your HARD DRIVE (aka: Hard Disk), located on the left side of the unit, has crashed. You will need to replace the HD.

When you replace your hard drive, you will need to have the latest firmware on a

usb stick. Download the firmware from the playstation official website onto a usb

stick. Once prompted by your system you will need to insert the usb stick into the

PS3. Good luck..

You will need 2.5" Sata Hard Drive.

Cannot initialize HDD

Try taking the back off & unplugging the battery from the hard drive for a few seconds. This worked for me. You could also try pressing the reset button on the back of the player (I used the end of a bent paper clip). Leave it plugged into the charger when you take the back off. Good luck!
