The pump has a 1/2" breather hole and an 1 1/2" vent connection. The unit must be vented to the open air using the 1 1/2" vent connection, air must flow in and out of the vent pipe at all times. The 1/2" breather hole is only used for European installations. In the US you must keep it plugged or seal capped, if left open odor will emmit through there.

3yr old saniflo + started making loud vibrating noise and smells also small black particles come out - husband opened top and looks like a mesh thing has disintegrated. Toilet is at end of sink, bath /...

Unfortunately the systems are desiged to pump out. The disintegrated screen thing is part of the maceration end of the system. Your going to have to clean the thing out and replace the macerator.

Our cassette loo seems to develop a urine smell within a day. We empty it every other day and every day in warm weather. What can we do to minimise this problem?

1 cuop of bleach & 4 cups of water , swish around every now and again for an hour, empty, rince and add chemicals as normal, should work.
i use the toilet everyday and if this is done about once a month no more smells

When i flush my macerator the charcoal filter moves up and i get this smell. why is my filter moving up

Where the filter is, should be an opening of at least 1/2" which must be kept plugged or seal capped. The 1/2" breather hole is only intended for European installations. In the US you must keep it plugged otherwise odor will emmit from that 1/2" breather opening.

Make sure there is water in the rear tank. Check that the wax seal between toilet and floor is not rotted out.

Hi how can i stop the saniflo system from smelling all the time a engineer fixed it but it just smells awfull all the time is there anything that can be used to stop the smell thanks

The problem with the smell is that the macerator air switch manufactured by Lafoo has a diaphragm in it that tends to sag with time. The switch is mounted vertically instead of horizontally on the circuit board, which is the preferred method of operation. Huge mistake by Saniflo. This prevents the macerator from switching on properly and the unit tends to fill up to high causing the smell. The Lafoo air switch is 5.5mbar and actually has a built in adjustment dial that can be seen when one removes it from the circuit board. The solution (besides putting in a 3.5mbar Lafoo switch) is to unsolder the original switch, solder two 2" pigtails onto the switch and soldier the pigtails back onto the board. This will give you enough room to have the switch hang horizontally and allow gravity to help assist in triggering the diaphragm in the switch. Also, you will also now have the benefit of being able to adjust the sensitivity of the switch if need be depending on the atmospheric pressure where you live. The pressure side (air tube) should be on the top and not the bottom. After you make this modification, your Saniflow will work better than new and the smells will immediately dissapear. The switch will now trigger every time your flush the toilet or when the water level in the unit reaches the proper height. An enzyme type cleaner (used in RV's) will help descale any sludge in the unit but the main issue is with the air switch and how it is mounted. If you need pics of how the unit should look after it is modified, e-mail me at My wife now has her own bathroom back!

Sanivite smelling first thing in the morning

The unit has an 1 1/2" vent connection on top of the unit which must be vented to the open air (outside of the house) as per plumbing codes. Check for any loose connections or maybe the connection into the main sewer line may be leaking causing it to smell.

Bad smell fro macerator when toilet flushed after being left overnight

Typically on macerating or grinder pumps there is a small 1/2" breather hole on top of the lid, about the size of a dime or nickel. That breather hole must be kept plugged or seal cap. If left open, odor will escape through there. Make sure the pump is vented using an 1 1/2" vent pipe which must be vented to the open air so air can flow in and out of the vent pipe at all times. Also you might want to check for loose connection or waste water leaking from the pump, toilet or any of the connections.

How can I minimise the smell of my macerator

Possible causes and solutions:
  1. Poor Ventilation, make sure macerator is properly vent. From top of lid there is a separate 1 1/2" ventilation pipe make sure it's installed and pipe/fittings are undamaged, fittings are all tight and secure. Vent is free of debris.
  2. Leaking Seals. Inspect lid Gasket for damage and deterioration, Replace with new gasket if damaged or deteriorated.
  3. Check all connection to ensure tightness, Lid tightly, Pan Gasket, hose/pipe fittings tight and secure.
I hope this helps in solving your problem, please rate the helpfulness of the answer. Good Luck and have a great week. Jeff
