You blew the resistor in the radio, you will need a new one to be able to use this radio,Don't try it again the more you do the more damage you'll do to the radio.

I put new radio in my 96 jeep grand Cherokee now dash lights don't work

dash back lights, you mean, not the warning lamps in cluster
the dash back lamps run off a dimmer (park ckt)
and if you wire this line wrong called dial light line.
you blow up the dimmer or just the fuse for it.
check fuses.
do not ground that wire, at radio ever.
the schematic is free. posted here over 100 times.
here it is 1 more time, click wiring, radio
chapter 8w (wiring)
see page 47 (Radio)

blew up fuse 12 did you?
radio conn. C1 pin 4.
do not ground this wire or boom.... (you let smoke out)

keep in mind many jeeps have upto 3 radio choices new.
getting the correct schematic, takes cash

I have a 1989 cobra 29 Ltd classic cb. It got water spilt on it sitting on my tabble so I took the covers off and took a heat gun to it and dried it. I also disconnected the internal speaker and left it...

# 1 you should never dry out a radio with a heat gun.#2 the reverse polarity diode is what is blowing out. take that wire you fixed and toss it.go to Rad Shak or a truck stop and buy a power cord with a lighter plug attached. .Then have someone you can trust replace d23. hook up your coax then your cord turn it on and you are good to go.

Changed radio instramentpanel gages lights went dead

You probably touched a wire wrong and blew the fuse for nighttime illumination, same fuse that lights up the dash. Also, you might've hooked up the vehicle illumination wire wrong in the back of the new radio, causing a short and the fuse blew

Radio was pluged on wrong and belw inline fuss. replaced fuss but still wont work. how much damage is done.

Do not know how much damage is done, but you can check it with a ohm meter. Take the cover off the radio, there is a protection diode, I think it is D23,check to see if burned or open, also check all resistors and capacitors around this for burned or puffy, exploded, etc. Replace them with the same or subs. as listed. Also check the circuit board trace for burns, etc. ..hope this helps..

Radio wont work at all

Most likely, if the key was NOT on, you blew the memory fuse (Factory wire color pink). Are your dome interior lights out? The fuse is either under dash by feet, or under the hood. Don't worry, I've been installing for over 28 years and I've done it a "few" times :-)
