Question about Mitsubishi WS-65809 65" Rear Projection Television
Does the problem happen with all the inputs? Have you tried coax (cable) and RCA audio? Go through the menu on the TV fully and look at the audio channel options, make sure you don't have SAP or TEXT turned on.

You cable box seems to be set to output it's sound only on the digital connection. Try switching it to a Surround or stereo mode, you should get sound on your TV, but you may lose it on the receiver. My dish receiver works this way, when I turn on the optical output I lose analog sound and vice-versa.
Look through the settings in the menu of your cable box for the audio sub-menu and try different settings, try changing it to analog if that is an option. Your cabling seems to be corrent but you box is only outputting digital sound.

There might be a possibility that you have enable the external speakers.
If that is not the case, your audio amplifier IC could be defective.

Here is my set-up. Cable comes into High-def cable box. From cable box: coax to antena A; component video and RCA audio out to DTV; digital audio out to surround amplifier.
This is what I get with close captioning (CC) turned off:
Antena A: picture, no sound, no CC;
DTV: picture, no sound, CC on;
Surround amplifier: audio works, CC on.
SAP or TEXT is off.
