Will any Wireless Adapters work without the PC's NIC?

I have a Cisco Wireless Router. I'm just wondering, will a Wireless Adapter work even without a Network Interface Card (NIC) installed in the PC?; The NIC recently does not work anymore.

Yes even without any NIC card installed on your computer , the wireless adapter will definitely work since its a different device that work for wireless connection and has nothing to do with your NIC card configuration.

Adapter inactive

It is not the problem with the router. It is the problem with the wireless adapter on your computer. Open Network connections and look for Wireless network connection. If it is not there then open the Device Manager and look for Wireless network adapter under Network adapters. It seems that wireless adapter on your computer is not working or it is not detected by your computer. If you have external wireless adapter then unplug it and replug it.

I have a Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter and a Cisco/Linksys WRT54GS Router. The signal is extremely poor even though the router is only 10 feet away. It does not appear to be an interference issue.

Hi,
You can update the Linksys Firmware to a newer version if is available, please check the Linksys support site
http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT54GS
Another chance is to change the Wireless Channel maybe 11, to avoid any intereference with wireless phones.

Netgear N150 Wireless usb adapter just installed. It identifies router and confirms good connectivity, but continues "acquiring network address" without success.

This means the DHCP service is not enabled on the wireless router.

either enable the DHCP service on the wireless router

or

Give a static IP onto your wireless NIC card ( Netgear N150 Wireless usb adapter )

Reloaded OS (Vista) and not can't connect to my functioning Wireless Router. Device Manager does not show a Wireless NIC.

If you don't even have the wireless driver installed that would be why you can't see the wireless network/router. If you give me the model of the computer/laptop or motherboard. I would be happy to get you the correct drivers. If this is a 3rd party wireless nic that wasn't installed by the manufacturer then I would need the model number of the specific NIC. Once I have that information I can assist you further.
Thank you,
Lee

I would highly recommend using a USB Wireless Adapter. They are relatively inexpensive depending on the distance between your physical router and your PC. Cisco has some very reliable USB adapters, you can purchase them from a local Radio Shack, Walmart or BEst Buy..

How does the pc wireless adapter work for laptops with embarq equipment. currently using dsl with embarq.

pc wireless adapter will work then if you have also another network like wireless router or another PC or Laptop with wireless adapter, if your going to use this wireless adapter network in pc to pc is you are going to setup by adhoc to adhoc connection, itself detect for sharing a network without any router needed, but if you do such simple network connection use wireless router, its definitely work easily. Aumatomaticall detect wireless router on your wireless adapter network.. Good luck!

Nic card issues?

Do you have any 2.4MHz cordless phones in the house or is the computer near a microwave? those two items can cause interference. You can go to Dell.com, go to support then download drivers/software, enter in your service tag is best if you know it? find the network card driver and download it. You can find out which NIC card you have by going to my computer, system, then device manager and right click on the NIC, then properties, it will tell you what card you have.
