My Elna 730 pro. The thread is fraying and breaking.

Be sure to install a brand new needle that is recommended for the thread and fabric you are using.

Check to make sure the machine is threaded correctly. Remove the thread and rethread from the beginning.

Could be old/bargain bin variety thread. Use only fresh, good quality thread.

Another possibility is an incompatibility of needle, thread, fabric. Make sure the thread is not too small for the needle eye which will cause thread fraying. If the fabric is coarse or dense, it can also cause the thread to fray--a needle with a larger scarf (ie top stitch needle) will help protect the thread during the multiple times the needle pierces the fabric. In rare instances, the needle may be defective or there machine has a burr somewhere that is catching and shredding the thread.

Schmetz Needles Needle Guide

It is important to install brand new needles frequently, ie every 8 hours of sewing. The needle is a very inexpensive item but could be very expensive in frustration, damaged fabric, and possible machine damage.

How to use a twin needle on my SR2000 toyota sewing machine

First, verify that your machine can use a twin needle. Most machines take will use a twin needle will have separate thread guides and duel thread spool pins.

To thread it, thread one thread all the way through one of the needles and then thread the second thread through to the second needle. This will help keep the threads from twisting.

I am using a finesse 356 sewing machine and the thread keeps on breaking off at the needle. What could be the problem?

Could be threaded wrong. Could be tension too tight. Could be a bad needle. Could be bad thread (avoid old thread or bargain bin thread). The fabric, needle, and thread may not be compatible, ie the thread is too large for the needle's eye, could be incorrect thread for the fabric, the fabric may be too coarse and is wearing the thread and causing it to break... There could be a burr or nick somewhere that is catching the thread. The thread could be hanging up somewhere in the thread path on the way from the spool to the needle causing it to break when it reaches the needle.

Top thread on my Brother Limited Edition 350 Sewing machine keeps breaking. Having used the automatic cutter, the thread pulls up and out of the needle when I want to start sewing again. Also the machine...

rethread the machine
try a top thread tension of 3 or 4
change the needle
always keep a thread tail of 3-5 inches on top & bobbin thread & keep the thread pulled back behind needle before starting to sew
always keep the bobbin area clean of lint & loose thread
& check under the needle plate for lint also
you might consider having the machine serviced, since you said it sounds like a tractor
some needle & thread are not compatable-try this

Cut 6-8 inch piece of thread of the spool you are going to use for your project
Take the needle you are going to use for the project
& insert the thread thru the eye of the needle
& lift one end of the thread to a 45 degree angle
& if the needle is the right size for the thread it will slide down the thread
But if the needle hangs on the thread you need one size larger needle for the thread

Top thread breaking especially when machine in reverse.

try this
The machine is not threaded correctly--rethread the machine
The thread tension is to tight--reduce the thread tension (lower number)
The thread is to thick for the needle--select a larger needle
The needle is not inserted correctly--remove needle & reinsert the needle (flat side toward the back)
The thread could be wound around the spool pin
The needle is damaged--replace
Some needles & thread are not compatible--try this

Cut 6-8 inch piece of thread of the spool you are going to use for your project
Take the needle you are going to use for the project
& insert the thread thru the eye of the needle
& lift one end of the thread to a 45 degree angle
& if the needle is the right size for the thread it will slide down the thread
But if the needle hangs on the thread you need one size larger needle for the thread
