May 15, 2010 - i tryed the yellow button, i was thinking the samething,, but it did not work,, also the used carb from ebay came with is own throttle control so i used it,,

7 years ago we wre pulling some logs when it started, lost power, its like its not geting enough gas,
i took the air box off and you can here boging/air sucking noise, when you let go of the throttle is stops makeing that noise,, it Idols and starts fine

ty for trying but i tryed a new filter, and blow the lines out 7 years ago when it started,

its been 7 years ill recheck but i dont think thats the problum,

back then i tryed many things, Came down to it must be the carb, havint worked on it for 7 years..so i got a used carb,, this new/used carb will leak gas from the bottom, i think the flot is stuck, only leaks when its off, i have to shut the gas off when im done working on it,

the problum is the same with both carbs, SOO i dont think its a carb problum, I was hoping it was i payed 250 for the new.used leaky carb which is BS that i have to open a carb i payed so much for.

When i get it running right ill worry about fixing the over flow.

remember the first carb did not leek and i cleand it thinking i loss power from that..

I get the same exact problum i had with the old carb 7 years ago.

ty for trying but it idols just fine, like i said the problum remained the same with both carbs,

Are you saying both carbs need to be adjusted?
it starts and idols fine i dont think adjusting that will help, its already idols fine, TY for trying but can you see everything it posted to other techs here? if so plz take the time to read everything, the first tech already tryed a quick $ with his wast of time link he gave me,

I got all weekend off to work on this I will retry the gas lines and filer, but im looking for someone that works on polaris atv's,

i read that a worn cam lobe will do this over time but this started and got bad fast..

like i said was pulling logs started to loss power, i got it back to the house [10min] and that was it no power won't rev up, so back then I did some carb work then gaveup,, that was 7 years ago and it sat in that spot outside for all this time..

put the new carb in and started up fine after all this time, but the problum remained.

I know what yor trying to say [do the work!!]AND YOUR RIGHT!
i was hoping to find someone that had the same problum, I got all weekend,

Ill check the cam first, i need to get that off my mind,

when i started to work on it after 7 years i wanted to make sure its not fobar,, it runs so i want to fix, The links wont help for this but they are good links to haave ty

http://www.scribd.com/doc/19783206/1998-Polaris-Sportsman-500A-Parts-Manual
Above is the parts manual, below is a service manual in PDF format. I am sure with all this you will be able to troubleshoot and repair your motor.
Some tips, Check, Battery, Check EARTH, Check, Spark plug lead, (Replace on spec usual) Spark plug (Again replace on spec) Check any "Points" system, be they mechanical, or electronic, Check the capacitor, if there is one. Now, make sure you are getting a good hot spark. Now when you are sure you have a good electrical side, we troubleshoot the "Gas" side of things, now, check, the Carburettor, check, the Float, and Float Bowl, check the Float Valve as well, check Choke is OK, check, Butterfly Valve is OK, Set the Mixture, make sure you have good fuel flow to carburettor. Hopefully between this advice and the links provided you should be able to remedy your problem. http://www.freepdfmanual.com/2009/02/06/polaris-sportsman-400-atv-parts-catalog-2005

Your jetting is off, find the pilot jet on the carburetor. If it is a Mikuni carburetor then it's an air pilot. Move the pilot jet out 1/4 turn at a time, this should increase the amount of air mixing with fuel at idol

You may have a clogged in line fuel filter.
check your fuel line also for crimping.

Hello my name is Heath it will be my pleasure to assist you. The problem is in the throttle control try holding the override button on the left hand grip and rev it up if it revs then the thstuck throttle control is bad it in the right hand grip under the cover with the two screws had this problem on a 1996 polaris it also keeps you from reving it in reverse unless you hold down the overide button.

Sportsman 90 idles wont rev

Replace spark plug (gap correctly),Drain all fuel, replace fuel filter, replenish tank with fresh fuel, do a thorough readjustment of the carb settings (last resort - remove and rebuild carb)

97 polaris 500 sportsman 4x4 atv carburetor adjustments, wont rev and very rich i removed carb, cleaned jets and installed new needle seat

If you have gone through the carburetor and your atv still won't rev it sounds like the exhaust lobe on the camshaft is going flat. They have an overhead camshaft in the 500 motor and the exhaust lobes seem to wear down if the oil is broken down (gas in oil) or if the wrong oil is used. Easy way to tell is to remove the 8 screws on valve cover and the spark plug. Then remove the 4 screws holding down the rocker arms. Once the rocker arms are removed you can see the camshaft, pull on the recoil rope to rotate engine until the lobes are facing upward. The two outer lobes are the intake lobes, and the center is the exhaust lobe. If the exhaust is worn, you will definitely be able to tell because it should be about the same height as the intake. Or if you don't feel comfortable doing that I would recommend a reputable repair shop. Hope this helps, and if you need more help let me know, Daniel.

I had this problem on a 05 polaris sportsman 700 carb... I dissasembled the carb. cleaned it all out... It actually was fine. It turned out the torque of the motor broke the hard rubber intake that connects the airbox to the motor... This part is $60 and takes 2 bolts to change! mjninke@yahoo.com

Bogs down & spits back through carb.

Sounds like you may need a valve job. Have you been keeping the valve clearances adjusted? It's important to do that on a four-stroke engine. Check your compression to find out if the valves are ok.
