Question about GE JVM1860 Microwave Oven

Microwave won't work after lightning storm

We had a lightning storm the other night that apparently sent a power surge or something. Our GE Profile Spacemaker xl1800 will not turn on now. Is there something we can do or do we need to call a repairman?

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number
here.

You should check the fuse, the magnetron thermostat, and the oven cavity thermostat.

Accessing some components (the oven cavity thermostat for instance) for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

We had a power surge and now the microwave does not work, model number MH1160XSB-0 whirlpool, what could be the problem? We put a fuse in and it kept blowing.

Model MX6110XB. Nothing worked. LCD panel was dead. Unplugged and replugged; and everything works.

This fix described for the GE Spacemaker. They say problem result of a power surge. Apparently applies to different manufacturers; or does GE make Whirlpools?

We had a bad power surge during a storm last week which fried my Panasonic NN-T990saf. My question is it worth trying to get it repaired or should I just buy a new micro wave?

Although lightning damage is normally fatal to anything with electronics inside, you might remove the back panel and look for fuse holders. If you find one (minimum) or two (likely), replace them (if you have a cheap multimeter you can check for continuity) and see  if it will turn on. You may have to do a little telephone work to locate the high current fuse which is probably 30 amps.
If you live in an area of frequent lightning strikes, investing in a 'whole house' surge arrester makes sense. These are installed in the main breaker box and any brand I've seen comes with a $10-25,000 insurance policy to replace any dead appliances that fail despite the surge protector. They cost $150-250 US plus installation which you can save if you are afraid to DIY.

Microwave will not heat food

Dear Pam,

I am familiar with this problem...

It can be the drive belt for the microwave dispersing unit (fan), which is an quick, inexpensive repair... a burned wire, which is also a quick, inexpensive repair... or a chip on the circuit board that has blown, most likely due to a lightning strike or other power surge, not as quick and a little more expensive to repair...

My recommendation is to unplug the microwave, take the cover off after removing the cover screws with a screwdriver, and just be nosy... take a good look for something obvious like any of the above items...

Write back if I can be any further help...

Seems like electrical storm fried my Advantium??

This is likely caused by a momentary surge from a distant lightning strike.

Take a look at some of these surge arresters:

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2005-37,GGLG:en&q=%22whole+house%22+surge+protection

Also, your local utility may have them available for lease for a modest fee.
Most of these devices come with an insurance policy that would have replaced your microwave if it had still been damaged.

If I was building homes in our lightning-prone area, I would always suggest the installation of one of these.

No power...

If the stove was on without the hood fan's being on, it could have put too much heat in the "innards" of the microwave. It may have opened the thermostat or thermal fuse located inside - either on the chassis of the microwave or or the magnetron. It will look something like the one in the attached photo. For helpful exploded view diagrams and to order any needed parts, you can visit the GE parts Web site or the Sears parts Web site at http://www.geappliances.com/shop/prts/ or http://www3.sears.com/ (the 3 is correct) In my profile, you can find a link to my site, where you can find critical safety & disassembly tips. Post back if you need more help.
