Depends on the machine. In some case, the dc jack is easy to replace. IN other cases, you need to do soldering.

It takes about an hour to open an average laptop for the first time. When you get down the motherboard and jack. If the jack has power lines coming from it, you should be able to replace the jack for about $30.

If it is directly on the motherboard, you will need to solder. I would suggest a pro to do the soldering. That will cost you about $100 to $150.

You don't need to bother with the motherboard. It will cost more than an new computer.

MY ASUS F5VL MOTHERBOARD WON'T TURN ON???

Here below are possible causes and troubleshooting steps of laptop that can't power on, hope it may help:

Possible causes:
AC adapter failure.
Power jack failure.
Motherboard failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solutions:
Test the AC adapter with a digital multimeter. It's possible that you have a failed AC adapter. If you don't have a multimeter, test your laptop with another known good AC adapter.

It's possible that power jack (socket where you plug the AC adapter) is broken. Remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. In some cases you can fix the jack by resoldering it on the motherboard. In other cases you have to replace the jack with a new one. Using a multimeter, test if the power goes to the motherboard through the jack.

If replacing the AC power adapter and jack on the motherboard doesn't help, most likely you have a bad motherboard. Replace the motherboard.

When i oipen my desk top- my monitor block no display

This can be caused by a bad video card, a bad power supply, or a bad monitor.
I would first make sure the computer is actually starting up (listen for the fans and the hard drive).
Then try another monitor. If you get something on the display, then the monitor is bad.
If that doesn't work, and your monitor is normally fastened to the port at the back of the computer right near the USB ports and the network port, then your motherboard has probably gone bad.
There is a way to further check, though: Open the case and disconnect everything but the CPU and video and memory (take the cables off of the CD/DVD and the hard drive.)
Now try to start it. Still no video? Then you are looking at a motherboard problem.
One exception to this is if you have an add-on video card. You can tell by looking at the slots on the motherboard. If there is a card in one of them that the video fastens to, then I would suspect that that video card has gone bad and will have to be replaced.

My dell laptop dont turn on

Is there a green light on your power supply that plugs in the wall? If not, the power supply is dead or there's a problem on the motherboard.
To troubleshoot, unplug the laptop from the power supply, unplug the power supply from the wall. Now, plug the power supply into the wall, you should see a green or blue light. If there's a plastic spot for the light but no light is coming on, replace the power supply - better to try a known working on before spending the money on a new replacement first.
If there is a light, plug it into the laptop. If the light goes out when you plug it in, there could be a motherboard problem and the board needs to be replaced or the power jack is damaged and you need a professional to replace it.
If the light is on the whole time, but laptop does not turn on, this could also mean that the board is still bad.
Regardless if it doesn't power up with a good power supply it is usually a motherboard problem and the board needs to be replaced.
Check with dell to see if its under warranty and they will send the parts needed and a tech to replace if it is. You can also ask about purchasing a warranty so your money is better spent to keep your laptop alive and put it towards something useful for the lngevity of the system instead of just paying for the part and a tech.

Hi I have a hp dv7-3173nr laptop, that will turn on with lights but no video on the display or vga,or hdmi ports. The fans runs and the leds light up and that is all.I replaced the motherboard from hp and...

Hi, you better use usb mouse, the one with light at the bottom to see if it is on after you power on you pc. If you did not see the light on, that means the video chip on the motherboard or processor is bad. You have to try 1 memory at the time, then try the processor, if it is still not working, the motherboard is bad.

Mylaptop turns on and runs but the screen is completely black. What do I do? The power button is on and the battery charging light is on but the screen doesnt come on at all. I can hear the laptop booting...

Connect an external monitor then power up both the monitor and laptop. If you get display on external monitor, you have 3 possible problem. First, LCD is bad, Second, CFL on your LCD is bad and Third, the cable connecting your motherboard and LCD is bad or the connection is loose. It is better to replace the whole LCD assembly than to repair.

If you have external monitor but still can't get a display, your problem may be on the motherboard.

I have a problem charging my Gateway M-6843 Notebook. The battery and the charger don't seem to be the problem, I think it's the Charging port connection. Can this easily be repaired?

It is quite an easy repair, you will need some soldering skills to resolder it or to replace the socket. The hard part is getting to it, you have to vertually take the whole laptop apart to get at the solder side of the board. There are good videos on youtube that show you how it is done if want to take on the task yourself. If not you would be better off taking to your local pc repair shop and see how much they will charge for doing it.

I suspect that my video card is going bad. It is

To check if the video card is faulty, connect an external monitor to the video port, power up the monitor first and then the laptop.
The video data should automatically divert to the external monitor, if you see a normal Windows image on the external monitor, then the video card is OK and the fault is the LCD screen and or backlight.
If you don't get any images then video card is probably faulty and because it is built-in on the motherboard it cannot be replaced or repaired.
You could replace the motherboard but this might not be cost effective.

My packard bell has stoped charging

If your laptop has stopped charging and you've already replaced the AC adaptor, then most likely it's either the battery itself or the power port on your laptop. If the battery was fine up to that point then it's probably not the battery. To replace the power port can sometimes involve soldering the new port onto the motherboard of your laptop so it's usually best left to a professional. The port you can usually find on ebay. I've replaced a few that is just a small power board that plugs into the mainboard but other have to be soldered. It's not really hard to do, but it involves dismantling the whole laptop to gain access to the motherboard and sometimes requires soldering. Sometimes its very obvious and you can tell by trying to move the metal pin in the center of the plug on your laptop where it plugs in. If the center prong moves then it has become detached and must be replaced. If not it could also be a connection problem due to corossion. Without pulling it apart and looking at it, it can be hard to tell. Deptending on the extent of the work, it can cost from 50.00 - 200.00. I hope this helps.

Unstable projector connection in vista

You have bad news.
The flickering is caused by a faulty video card, can't be fixed as it is a chip on the motherboard. Need to replace the motherboard, this may not be cost effective, might be better to buy a new laptop.

Remove the hard drive from this laptop and insert it into a USB hard drive adapter case and you then have an external hard drive that can plug into a USB port of any computer to copy, backup and transfer files.

Broken power connect plug

The pin assembly is available online and usually runs between $10-$20. A quick Google should find you multiple sources for the part. It's not a hard job to do, just be careful when you are soldering the new assembly to the motherboard. And get a decent cable retention device after you fix your system, that way you won;t have that problem again.

This is what I use and recommend.
