I am not clear about your symptoms, so I will repeat as I understand them: If you can play a DVD disk on the drive but NOT read a regular CD, this is quite unusual, since playing a 4.7gb DVD is far more complex than mounting a regular 700mb CD. The point is this; it is very unlikely that the drive is bad if it can play DVDs. Therefore, I would first suspect the CD-Rom disk itself. Look at it with a light behind it. Can you see any holes of light or scratches shining through it? If so, the disk is bad. Also, try cleaning the disk with a VERY soft cloth, moving ONLY from the center of dsk to the outside of disk (not in a circular motion). Polish it this way, all the way around and try mouning the CD again. If this fails to remedy the situation, try a NEW disk, a never used CD disk that is known to be good. Last, if all else fails, I would suspect your DVD software itself. Most programs that read/play DVDs and/or write CDs/DVDs are "rogue programs" and/or "malware". They can take over your optical drive and cause all kinds of problems. I would suggest UN-installing all of them, then restart and try mounting a CD. To watch a DVD, you cannot get a better program than "VLC Media Player". It is FREE at www.videolan.org

Removing memory from Satellite A65-S126 Toshiba laptop

The built in 256 is integrated into the motherboard, and is not removable. If it's faulty, then, unfortunately, the motherboard will have to be replaced. There's no other way around it.
