Question about Canon PowerShot S20 Digital Camera

1 Answer

How many pictures can you get to "1" 2CR5 lithium battery on a Canon PowewrShot S20 digital camera... ball park figure? I would appreciate the answer, as I would like to know how many batteries I need for a float trip. Thank you very much, Mike

You're the only person who can answer that question. There are too many factors involved.

How often do you use the flash? How much do you zoom in/out? How much time do you spend focusing?

In addition there are environmental conditions, especially temperature.

How many pictures are you getting now?

My bad! There are alot of varibles I didn't think of. I think I can get a million if I'm careful... or 9 if I do everything. I'm sorry about wasting your time Mike

I'm sorry I couldn't give any hard and fast numbers. There is a standard many manufacturers use when rating their cameras. It involves autofocusing from one end of the range to the other for every shot, and using the flash for every other shot. That's not the way most of us shoot, and these numbers aren't of much use other than to compare cameras. Or the EPA mileage figures for automobiles.

As I mentioned in my first post, the best way to gauge the battery capacity to is track how many shots YOU get with a set of batteries.

I have the same problem with a Canon Powershot s20. Bought approx 5 years ago...

Many digital cameras (eg Samsung D53, Nikon 2100) have extremely poor battery life with alkaline batteries (under 20 shots!). Sometimes they won't even take a single picture.

Try using rechargeable batteries or "oxyride" disposable batteries. They perform infinately better.

My A720 IS (just aquired) wears out a new set of alkaline batteries in about 25-30 pictures. I've tried two different brands with the same results. Other cameras I've used with the same batteries will...

I only use Energizer Lithium or Ultimate Lithium batteries, the other wore out too fast for me too. I tried to be environmentally friendly, but not when you can only take as you said 20 - 30 photos.

Low battery

Digital cameras are like miniature computers, constantly processing large amounts of data, their power requirements far exceed film based cameras and conventional batteries are simply not up for the task. I have seen plenty of times where someone has bought a brand new pack of cheap batteries which fail to even turn on a digital camera! You are best to spend your money on a set of rechargeable Ni MH batteries. They will pay themselves off many times over and will reduce unnecessary landfill. You can of course still buy disposable if its more convenient but you really do have to spend up on top of the range quality to get any good use out of them. Also be aware that cameras using only two batteries (such as the 560) are more demanding again on battery performance.

CANON PowerShot A430 4.0mp Digital Camera eating batteries

The A430 is a 2 battery camera, and is known for being power hungry. Alkaline batteries just don't have the power for more than a few pictures in a digital camera (especially a 2 battery camera). Lithiums can also have problems. Some may also have reached their shelf life, and though right out of the package may even have problems just powering startup of the camera. Digital cameras for the most part should only be used with rechargeable NiMH batteries. If you read the camera's instruction manual concerning batteries, you may see the same recommendation. Modern NiMH batteries have over five times the energy concentration of the average alkaline (yep over five times more power!).

Keep in mind rechargeable NiMH batteries will save you money in the long run over alkalines, AND they'll last for at least 100 pictures per charge (and probably many many more). You'll be very pleased with their performance, and may be angry with yourself for not buying them sooner. When at the store, look on the package for a power rating of at least 2500 mah.

Replace battery sign in New canon A590si camera.

You're using the wrong batteries. You need to purchase lithium batteries. They are quality batteries for high powered, battery operated electronics. Personally, I have a battery charger and use rechargable duracell batteries. (HR6/ DC1500/ NiMH/ 1,2V) Gives you approximately 16 hrs before having to recharge.

Buying a Camara

Hey Dussan,
Three camera's that might work for you are the Nikon P80, Panasonic DMC-FZ50K, and the Sony DSC-H50. All three of theses camera's have a 12x optical zoom and up, they are all 9 mega pixel and up, they all have movie mode, they all use lithium-ion batteries, and they are all around the same price as the Canon. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

Low Battery

Could be a few things.
1) What kind of batteries are you using? Try NiMH batteries, not alkaline.
2) If that doesn't work - the best batteries are lithium rechargeable.
3) If THAT doesn't work - you may have a bad battery sensor, in which case you'll need to bring it to the nearest camera repair shop and have them replace it for you - it's not a huge deal, but it's better than having to switch off the camera for an hour or so, take a few pix, than switch it on again, and so on.
