Question about Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook

1 Answer

Hello. I was given an older Dell Laptop as a hand me down recently. It was not taken very well care of by the previous owner. It was making loud noises from what i thought was the fan. So I found a guide to safely taking it apart for internal cleaning. I followed it carefully and was able to clean out all the debris inside. i put it all back together just as the guide said. Now it wont turn back on. It will power on and i can hear it running, but it does not start up windows or anything. I hope i can salvage it. any solutions?

Hey man thanks for the advice. I figured it out thanks to some googling. I found out that when after taking it apart and removing the fan and processor, there is a certain way to put it backin involving a screw that locks and unlocks where the pins go. i had not turned that to the unlock position when i was putting it back together. It is a very tiny little plastic screw. i also found a thick wall of dust completely blocking the cooper heat walls that others have mentioned is a common problem for this Dell. So after cleaning that and finally getting the processor set right, it started back up just fine. Now it is super quiet and the temperature has dropped dramatically. Im glad i was able to salvage this laptop. I mainly use it to stream movies from my external drive to my PS3. It works like a champ now.

    For disassemble instructions.

*if you remove the fan and processer this part is important:
If you look closely, there are small LOCK and UNLOCK icons on either side of the space wher you would turn. After seating the CPU, simply turn the little notch to UNLOCK then back to LOCK, screw your heat sink and fan back in, replace all screws and parts. Blowing out the dust does help a ton but I think I will update the BIOS just to be on the safe side.

Reverse the rebuild and make sure you have made all the connections. If you don't see the BIOS startup on the screen and there is no sound from the hard drive you may have knocked off a component. With the bezel off the screen take a look and see if you can see the backlight on the screen glowing.

If all these fail you may have a power fault. Try disconnecting all external peripherals like mouse or flash drive and remove the hard drive and CD drive then try powering up. If the BIOS screen is shown then it is probably just a poor connection so make sure all the internal connections are pushed hard in and for the flexi make sure the locks are pushed back into the connectors.

OK. Can you connect an external monitor? DO you get any graphics then?

Great news. Would be worth you posting the text at least so others can try that.

Glad you are up and running now.

You are asking a whole lot here.
From what I understand, you are running Windows XP. The previous owner has not removed his name from the system.
You want your name to show up as a user.
You want the previous owner's info gone.

Do this:
Go to the control panel and to the Users icon. Create a new user (you) as an admin.
Now log off of Windows and log back on as you. Go back to the control panel and the users icon.
Click on the previous owner's name and choose "delete account." Do not save the data. Just choose delete.
This will delete the user and all his data.
This should do it for now.

I have a LX200 EMC 10". I had a similar software problem and solved it by downloading AstroFinder, bypassed the onboard software of the telescope, and controlled the telescope via my laptop. This was a more user frriendly method and allowed easy alignment of the telescope.

If the cmos is password protected, then you must reset the cmos. The best way to remove any signs previous owners is to reformat or do a system restore. You ca do this with the disks that came with the computer, you should put the system restore disk in and be on your way. Just follow the on screen instructions and you should be all set.

Hope this helps

Configuration Setup Password

Call Dell and they can help.

If this laptop is second hand, you will need to go to and transfer ownership to you. You can put previous owner unknown. If will take 30 days for the transfer to take effect. After that Dell will help you with your password problem.

They will give you a master password that will work only for your laptop.
You have to follow their directions carefully, or it will not work.

If it still does not work, double check the service tag.

If the motherboard has been replaced the service tag will be different.
The service tag is also listed in the BIOS, if you can get to it.

Dell laptop

That white screen is asking for your bios password. You probably set that the last time you did changes in the bios. If you bought the laptop second hand and the previous owner forgot to give you the password, contact him, or if you can not and/or do not remember the password you set, you have to contact dell, and they can give you a password for it, is no problem for a computer you own. You can chat to them here:

They're gonna ask you for the original owner information before they'llhelp you though. If you don't have the original information (ie youbought it second hand or off someone), you'll have to do a transfer ofownership. You need to give them the service tag and the express servicecode, that are on a sticker somewhere on the computer (bottom in case oflaptops). Enter the info in the required previous owner fields. Enterall your contact info and submit. It should transfer in a few minutes. Here's the link:

Let me know if this helped:)

Keys locking, screen changing set up, loud beeping, cannot log on

This Should Be Taken To A Specialist. The Screen Goes Upside Down Because There Is A Malfunction In The Magnetic Sensors So It Believes Its Closed. The Other Problems Just Sound Hay Wire.
Hope You Get It Fixed
