Hi, Check that you do not have a Tape Monitor switched on. That would provide the symptoms you are having, if it does not appear to be that, get back to me here and we shall investigate further.

If you have it in a surround mode, make sure there is a center channel speaker hooked up. Most voice tracks will come through the center channel

I have a Denon receiver and I took all the wires out and double checked them and they are in the right place but the receiver keeps turning off. I get a loud humming noise sometimes when the wires cross...

There's a clue there. Loud hum and tampering with wires changes something. Disconenct all speaker wires and see how that works out. Then add one at a time.

What is night and pure button?

'Night' compresses the audio's dynamic range to make soft sounds more audible and loud sounds less loud for a given volume setting. The assumption being that there are people sleeping while you're listening or there's so much environmental background noise that you won't hear the soft sounds. It sort of defeats the whole reason for having HIGH fidelity sound. Ditto for D.Comp.

'Pure' bypasses all internal analog processing (page 25). Why? Who can say? Other than to diagnose a problem. If the tone controls are contributing to the sound they don't belong in a Denon product to begin with. The implication is that to NOT use Pure or Direct is to inflict audible limitations on the sound. And you may lose control of the sub, too. Oh goody.

Excessive noise in my speakers

usually, it is background noise. Scratchy background noise. Gets worse the louder I turn up the volume. I ran a test on all the channels and it seemed to be the subwoofer channel. I've unpluged the subwoofer but that didn't help. I have also noticed that my receiver doesn't turn up nearly as loud as it used. I usually watch DVDs at a volume level of about 15 on my Denon and that's quite loud. But now, 15 isn't that loud at all. I went to Best Buy where I bought all of this equipment and they immediatly told me it was suge protector issue and wanted to sell me a high-end surge protector. Perhaps they are right but not sure why it began rather suddenly. Probably not helping you much.

Back ground music louder than voices watching movies on cable

Is this a new problem or always like this? <<<<<<<<

What is your speaker complement? The center usually carries the dialog.

Are the receiver and its speaker systems set up per the manual? Make it so.

How is the TV-related (Cable) audio entering your receiver? It SHOULD be from the cable box, digitally if available, NOT the TV. You don't need a Low-Fi middleman handling your audio.

No picture with cable to denon AVR-589

Long and painful answer!!! However, in the end, you need to bypass HDMI thru your receiver and go direct to the TV. Connect Digital Coaxial or Optical for audio to your receiver. Your version of HDMI in your receiver is not compatable with today's HDMI version. Yours is 1.1a and the current version is 1.3b going to 1.4. If you want detailed info as to "why", just google "HDMI 1.1 problems" you can read for hours! Sorry for the bad news! However, it is what it is. Hope this helps. If you need further help with setup, post a comment and I can give you further help.

Voices drowned out by background noise.

Not a suggestion, but I hope there is a solution.
Recently bought an LG HDTV that has a setting that should increase the voice over the background. If it does, I can't notice the difference. I guess they can probably measure it electronic.
I've had your same complaint for years, without a good solution. Best so far is to use headphones.
I have no idea why film people add all the extra noise. Most of it is not even real.
