Rick that don't sound good. If you know how to test the compressor and have a OHM meter we need test. See if fan is running under refrigerator and Click here=> HOW TO CHECK FOR A BURNED OUT COMPRESSOR do that first and then we move to what else may be the problem watch the movies on that page. That pop sound like shortig of start relay or something related to compressor. Please rate my solution after I have helped you resolve the problem and communicate with me. I am offering my help to you free. If need you may contact me here on Fixya or my Forum=> Appliance 911 My contact information is located above the Fixya Ad on my blog here=> Sea Breeze Appliance Parts and Technical Services, www.pcappliancerepair.com

Hey Rick did you find your answer? If I was wrong please tell me what that pop was. Pops and hot compressors are and indication of a short circuit. I believe because maybe you did not undedrstand you gave me a low rate. I am very good with refrigeration and HVAC products and a 30 year veteran of knowing what is most likely going on, You should have contacted me before giving me a poor rate, your mistake I could have helped you and saved you money, Sea Breeze

Correct, condenser coils remove heat from the freezer compartment, thusly they will be hot. Sounds like the compressor is failing and that is probably giving off a squealing sound and stops running until it stops. Then your compressor will overheat and stop running until the thermal protector cools down and allows it to run again. Try replacing the compressor cooling fan.

Checking out a air conditioner compressor and compressor problems
FIRST DISCONNECT ALL ELECTRICAL POWER
Ohm the windings
C to R = example 1.2
C to S = example 3.2
R to S = example 4.4 total of C to R and C to S or very close.

Then ohm each terminal to ground you shouldn't get any reading
If the compressor is hot or you tried to start it, the ohms will be close but not exact.
No reading from C to R or C to S open winding or thermal overload.
Let compressor completely cool down then ohm the C to R and C to S again
If it’s an open overload, you will get an ohm reading after it cools down and the overload closes,
you may just need to add refrigerant.
No reading from R to S and C to S open start winding.
In case of any open windings the compressor will have to be replaced.
If the compressor is getting the proper voltage and won’t start, it could be locked up.
You need an Ammeter to check this to see if it’s drawing locked rotor amps (60 amps or above)
You also need to check the run and start capacitor.
A bad run or start capacitor, the compressor won’t run, it will just hum.
If the compressor will run, but quits after a while and all of the above checks out OK.
It could be drawing high amps ( you will need an ammeter to check this out). Dirty condenser or condenser motor not running, overcharge of refrigerant, shunted windings, bad bearings in compressor.
The compressor gets hot and Suction or big line coming in to outdoor unit is warm or slightly cool, you are low on charge or metering device bad or stopped up.
If compressor runs for a while and quits and the suction line is frozen, cold or cool, then the filter, evaporator or condenser coils are dirty or plugged up, blower or fan motor not running and unit going off on high or low pressure switches.

Is the compressor running?? If its hot but not running , humming and clicking sound you may have just a bad compressor relay. Or a bad compressor.
If your compressor is runing you have lost your freon.Leak or hole in system.

Refrigerator is clicking, won't run

Is this clicking happening about every three or four minutes?
It sounds like the klixon, which is a thermal/current sensing device which is under the electrics cover on the compressor. It is a metalic disc which if the current is too high, or the compressor case temperature too hot, will cause the disc to expand and will move from being convex to concave in shape. As it moves from one to the other, it makes a clicking sound. The usual cause of a cycling klixon is lack of refrigerant in the system which causes the compressor motor to cease which means when it tries to start the current rises too high and the klixon 'pops' which breaks the contact. It cools down, 'pops' again, makes the contact, tries to start, won't because it is seized, current rises, klixon pops out again, and so on. You need to get a qualified refrigeration engineer in to fix it, or if it is an old unit, bin it and buy a new one.

Not cool even set the temperature to maximum cold, here the circulation fan running but not the compressor runing (I guess).

Sounds like the compressor has failed,But there may be a chance that the relay overload assembly may be faulty check same and replace and if compressor dosen,t start probably faulty compressor.Hope this helps Kind Regards.

Cooler no longer cooling

That POP noise sounds as though it is the overload on the compressor. Although personally I would describe it as a CLICK. If it is then you are either looking at a start device failure (relay or capacitor) or more likely a compressor failure. If you check underneath at the compressor side (black circular unit) and put your hand on the compressor if it is hot you are probably looking at a new compressor. Unless you have electrics for the compressor the only real solution is to have this confirmed by a fridge engineer. If it is the relay I would expect a bill of around £80 if it is the compressor thn it can be between £200-£400 depending on the size of the compressor. Hope this is of some help.
