Question about Brother MFC-7820N Laser Printer

2 Answers

Ghost printing I have a Brother MFC 7820N Laser Printer. If printing a large document, approx. 50 to 100 pages, the printer starts printing very poorly after about the third page. It looks like a ghost image. It is double printing on the page. It prints all the lines on the page but reprints them about 3 inches lower again on the same page. So all pages printed after page 3 are unusable. I can print one page at a time just fine. But who wants to print 100 pages one at a time? Any help is appreciated!!

Hello,

You have a worn image drum. The drum is the part of the printer that the print image is created on before it transfers the toner to the paper. This part is coated with a very thin layer of Teflon so the toner does not stick. When it gets worn the toner starts to stick and that produces the shadow or ghost image approximately 3 inches down the page because the diameter of the drum roller is 3 inches. You will need to get the part DR-350, Office Depot has them as well as many places on the internet.

I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.

I changed the drum, but it's still printing a ghost trail of the document on my copies.

Alternatively, if the printer is old enough (and these MFC 7820s are getting on in years), the fuser may need to be replaced. (Credit to Bobby Mcparrin for pointing this out in another thread.)

I've already replaced the drum and toner cartridge on my unit, and am still having the ghosting problems, so next step is to figure out how to replace the fuser. (It's a great piece of equipment that has served me well -- scans 20+ pages without jamming -- so I'd rather not send it to landfill. And I just replaced the motherboard a few months ago.)

Brother MFC-7820N Printer--vertical lines

You need to clean the scanner glass. Also known as the strip glass. It is a 1 inch wide strip of glass that runs from the front to the back. Your documents pass over this glass when they are scanned. Some of the wax crayon probably smeared off onto the glass and now when you scan the scanner sees these marks as stationary and thus records them as solid lines. Just look into the scanner section where your documents are fed in or depending on model, some are just to the left of the large original glass.
Good Luck and thank you for using Fixya.

Bad Scan Quality Using Brother MFC-7820N Document Feeder

Look to the left side of the flatbed glass for a thin strip of glass by itself. When you scan from the glass, the document stays put and the sensor moves across the document. When you scan from the feeder, the sensor stays in that glass strip and the document moves across the sensor. See what I mean? I would check the small feeder glass for dirt or scratches from staples or other flotsam. Also not a bad idea to blow out the feeder path with some compressed air to ensure the documents is handled smoothly. Hope this helps!

Problems with Brother MFC-7820N Laser Printer turns itself off

I just had same issue, it shared an outlet with a large volume work group copier, I unplugged it, opened and closed all compartments to make sure something open was not causing issues. I plugged it into different outlet and it appears to be back online. I have read some postings that this model has been known to draw over 15 amps. Its possible its starving for power. To test take to another room, plug in outlet by itself and see if it boots up.

Black line down middle of page

Clean the inside of the printer with a soft rag, be gentle and get as much toner up as you can, also your toner carttridge may be empty or the crum may be bad, start with a fresh toner carttridge and clean the printer out where the cartridge sits.

Print Problem - vertical lines

If the problem only occurs when using the document feeder, the problem is not usually caused by the drum. When using the document feeder, try to notice where the scanner (the light assembly under your scan glass)stops just before the paper is being fed. Some multifunction machines have a small piece of glass that is separate from the large scan glass and the scanner assembly stays parked underneith it as the original is being fed over it. Most likely there is something on the glass where the scanner parks as originals are being fed thru the feeder. When putting your original on the large scan glass to copy, the mark on the glass will only show as a spot, but will show as a vertical line thru the whole copy when using the feeder.

Brother MFC-7820N Laser Printer

The 7820N prints double-sided manually using the drivers. From Windows, select File / Print. On the pop-up window, click on Preferences, select the Advanced tab, click on the A/B pages icon, and select Manual Duplex. "OK" your way out. When you print, you'll first confirm to print one side of all pages. Then follow the instructions that appear.
