This issue seems to be a service problem.
First take the bottom off and remove it manually oil it and it should work.
This step motor error indication could mean that the machine is not running freely and rather forcing the motors to overwork. Or it could mean that your step motor is burned out. In that case you would need to contact Kenmore to replace the motor. 99% of the time, however, they do not burn out, they are only frozen. In that case, you would need to thoroghly service the machine.

Thanks
Jimmy

Do you mean take to bottom off the machine or take the bottom off the pedal itself?

    Thank you very much,

According to sew & Vac, my New Home Memory Craft 8000 needs a zig zag step Motor. Can anyone get me the part or sell their machine, cheaply?

You can search for online sewing machine parts vendors or look for a used machine for sale, ie eBay. Even a local sewing machine repair service may be able to get it for you.

BTW, some of these older mechanical machines are the best...

My Janome memory craft 8000 will only sew backwards and the screen shows step motor error. the machine is 19 years old. Is this fixable?

step motor error may mean the embroidery arm is out of position gently push it back home towards the machine and see if this helps. If the mother board is gone, they will not be able to replace it as its so old, but you may be able to get an 8000 or 9000 on ebayso you can still use your discs if you don't want to get a new machine

I want to sell my 1991 New Home memory Craft 8000 sewing machine

A good place to see what machines are selling for is Ebay. That's where I sold a sewing machine and an embroidery machine.

It helps to know your product and machine embroidery lingo.

What are cassettes? Floppy disks? These make the machine borderline obsolete.

Memory cards are still around, but most EM now have USB connectivity or USB flash drives.

Satin thread? Embroidery machines use Rayon or Polyester embroidery thread.

Having had the machine recently serviced is also a plus.

JANOME MEMORYCRAFT 8000 STEPPING MOTOR ERROR

if you ever have this problem, it is because you have had something in the way of the embroidery arm at the back of the machine, so it has not been able to move freely; you'll get a terrible noise as the machine is unable to do what it wants, slips gears or something and then can't bring the arm to its home position. But fear not, i have found if you turn the machine off and gently push the arm back home to touch the machine as it is the start position, when you turn it on, it will work fine and no harm done. just make sure the arm can move freely before you start embroidery!

Stepping motor error

Turn off the machine, pull the embroidery unit to the left a couple of inches and to the back a couple of inches. Don't force it if it won't go. Turn on the machine and see if it will reset. If does everything should be okay. If the problem is not solved, it's time for a trip to the Dealer.
