My 32" Akai did the same thing. It was working fine, I tried everything but nothing worked. Took it to a reapairman and it was the power supply. He said that they were very known to have this problem. I had the system attached to a UPS battery backup and it made not difference.

iF you tried to unplug sets and or boxes connected only a few reasons remain: if remote works when first on or when very close to set the issue may be the infrared receiver==the remote itself can easily be tested but does not sound like the problem although it could be.
If the set is not usable and over a certain age, I would go replace it.
Universal remote controls (like the one for your comcast cable box in which it allows you to control other devices) have "the most popular" IR codes programmed inside of it. When you type in the numbers "10812,10702, etc" you are telling the remote to use that particular IR code within its "database"
The key thing to know is that universal remotes do not have every code, just the most popular. If you have tried all of the codes listed in the manual for you model TV there's not much you can do.
Try searching for a code. Some brand names, such as "Akai" may have other manufacturers parts inside of it, Searching usually is done by going through certain key-presses on the remote to try all of the codes available.
Buy another Universal remote, not all remotes are created equal as some have mode IR codes built in than others, if you have an odd brand TV, it may be more difficult to come across one that works.
Buy a learning universal remote, although usually more expensive these remotes will allow you to "learn" the IR codes from your old remote to the universal remote.
i think your unit suffered what we call a surge current.it happens when sudden power out and on of the electricity.a large amount of current is flowing instantly when the power came back, like waves.so units which permanently plugged-in suffers.especially the tv etc.so if you can open your unit and check for blown-out fuse or any related incident you can find in your unit.its best to have a tech's help for that.i'm sure there is a defective part/parts in your unit.
