Got an old MAXTOR 71640 given to me that I need jumper settings for. At one point I was able to get Win.XP Pro to identify it and even tell me how small it is but couldn't format it

Aint fixed. After reading, re reading, trying what I read and then reading it again, I left Maxtors site with the same question. I mean, I have spent all night trying one combination or another out of those 10 pins! It only being 512 MB (according to the one time boot up did read it), It's not large enough for my Windows XP pro and thought to make it external for some MP3 music but can't figure out how. Not even with this old computer!!!
If this wasn't my first build, I wouldn't even try. Thing is, I got dreams and want to learn so that I understand how this all works BEFORE I build those dreams (either an Asus M2N-SLI Wi-Fi w/6400 Anthilon or MSI K9A2 Platinum w/Phenom 9600). Already have the case and a few extras to start my project but before I go spending the big bucks, This Intel CA810 is my learning tool. Being new with computers and all, I put this thing together from several and hundreds of hours using it...I'm hooked !
As for purchasing support, not this week. Rents due. Not sure a product that's pre-2000 and so small of storage would be worthy of selling let alone giving it away. Hey, maybe thats the problem, It came out of a GateWay!!! Not to knock em but they dont interchange very well I noticed.

Windows will recognize it. Just be sure the other drive is jumpered as master/primary and the old drive is jumpered as slave/secondary and that they connect to the same IDE cable.

Jumper off will set the drive to slave. If you can connect both drives to the same ribbon cable with the master on the end & the slave to the second connector. Look at your bios as win is booting up to see if shows the drive as slave, you will not be able to copy windows as a operating system off of the drive, but should be able to copy files.

Good luck on your endevors.

Old maxtor harddrive

Most Maxtor Drives have jumper setting so that if "Jumper 50" is set; the two pins farthest from the power jack, is Master Drive. No pin jumper set, Slave or Cable Select. I hope this helps.

Pin settings

There are four Jumper settings on a Maxtor:

(got it from http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-32378-Windows-XP-Home--No-boot-device-help.html)

posted by by mr.smit:

"The 2nd row, is for DS(Master): only 1 drive in PC, or the drive that you want to boot up from.
The 3rd row, is CS Enabled: Cable select, the computer desides wich harddisk is master and wich one is slave
The 4th is cap limit: windows cannot run on harddisks that are to big, like 300gb, so putting jumper on cap limit (capacity limit) makes it smaller for windows to use it.
The 5th row has no use, or i don't know what it does, either of that 2."

I would like to add about the DS (Slave) setting. It is used if there is another drive present on the system which you want to boot from. It will become a spare Hard Disk.

Here is a picture of a maxtor drive indicating where to find model number and jumper settings.
