Used 3-prong from old dryer on new dryer

Used the old 3-prong plug form old dryer on newer Kenmore dryer, it worked for a few minutes then it stopped working. We installed the correct 4-prong outlet and re-installed the original plug but it still doesn't work.

You might have gotten one of the power phases connected to the neutral or ground and back fed power to the electronic board and burned out a fuse or board, there is a wiring diagram in the rear by the power hookup

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. As the dryer runs for a few minutes and then stops, please check the following:--

• Empty dryer.
• Check motor spins freely.
• Lint buildup around drive motor.
• Low voltage present.
• Blower impeller blocked in blower housing.
• Drive motor - start switch contacts stuck closed.

However, if it is still under warranty, then I’ll suggest taking advantage of it instead of opening the unit to void the warranty. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

How do you change a 4 prong dryer plug down to a 3 prong power plug

Today's newer electric dryers now use a 4 prong plug. If you try to relegate your new dryer to the old 3 prong hook-up that you currently have in your house, you will have issues with your dryer. Instead, I recommend you update your house's wall receptacle to the newer 4 prong terminal and keep that new dryer warranty intact. Douglas

The dryer has a four prong male plug and the outlet is a three prong female - which do I change? the dryer cord is the easiest, but how do I connect the leads?

4 PRONG PLUG WIRING: 2 HOTS(RED&BLACK) 1 NEUTRAL(WHITE) 1 GROUND(GREEN). 3 PRONG PLUG WIRING: 2 HOTS&1 NEUTRAL. YOU MUST USE 2 HOTS & 1 NEUTRAL ON A 3 WIRE PLUG. THE GROUND WIRE(GREEN) WHICH IS HOOKED TO FRAME OF THE DRYER IS NOT USED ON OLDER 3 WIRE PLUGS. IT IS AN ADDITIONAL SAFTEY GROUND ON NEWER MODEL 4 WIRE PLUGS.

Frigidaire GLEQ2152ES Dryer Won't Power UP

IF you find that you have only a 3 wire feed for this dryer (and the reason for the 3 prong receptacle)...then you can not properly install a 4 prong dryer cord to it. You now have 2 choices....either rewire (assuming that it is a 3 wire supply) the entire run from the dryer breaker to the outlet location with 4 wire (typically a run of 8/3 with ground having a black, red, white and bare ground)and install a 4 prong dryer receptacle to match the configuration of the new dryers cord.....OR - you can remove the 4 wire cord and replace it with a 3 wire cord....re-using the ground strap - IF it is still in place.

I need to change the power cord on our duet dryer from a 4 prong to a 3 prong The 3 prong does not have a neutral wire does that matter?

I think you need to read the following link to make sure you aren't violating any electrical codes, first:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r793520-3_prong_4_prong_power_cord_conversion

Yes, a 3-prong DOES have a NEUTRAL wire. That would be the WHITE terminal. A 3-prong does not have a separate ground. The NEUTRAL is usually grounded at the appliance casing by a jumper wire.

Read in the "Additional Notes" section on how to convert from a 4-prong to 3-prong. Also note that some of the newer appliances require a 4-prong plug in order to run correctly. I have a Kenmore HE3 model dryer that is currently using a 3-prong power cord. Since this model Kenmore is manufactured by Whirlpool, and is identical to the Duet, you should be okay with a 3-prong plug.

We are trying to connect an OLD Kenmore dryer which has a three-prong connection. We bought a 4-prong cord, but we do not know how to connect it as the 3-prong cord has all grey wires. Would appreciate...

Look at the plug wires. On the 4 prong plug, it should be labeled which ones are neutral. Some plugs even come with a diagram stating which wires lead where. Back to the plug itself, rule of thumb, the flattest part of the plug goes to the block, so lay the connections on the ground where they lay flat on the floor, left loop will got to left side of powerblock, right loop to the right side, the other 2 are used for a ground. look at the specs for the dryer also.

REPLACING DRYER 4 PRONG PLUG

This is common issue. Due to some building codes the 3-prong configuration is no longer used in homes. The wiring is similiar with one exception. The 4-wire plug uses an additonal (WHITE) NEUTRAL wire.

Here's a brief explanation of how the plugs are configured:

Dryer 3 prong wire configuration:

RED - 120 VAC
GREEN - GROUND
BLACK - 120 VAC

Dryer 4 prong wire configuration:

RED - 120 VAC
GREEN - GROUND
BLACK - 120 VAC
WHITE - NEUTRAL

BOTH plugs provide the SAME source voltages to your appliance:

220 VAC - provided across the RED and BLACK leads are what drives your heating circuitry.
120 VAC - usually tapped of the BLACK wire is used to run the drive motor and timer on MOST dryers.

The wire terminal block in the back of the dryer should have a black, white, and red wire running to it from the dryer wiring harness. With the 4 prong plug, simply attach the BLACK, WHITE and RED wires at the terminal block ensuring that you match the RED and BLACK wires as they are configured and attach the WHITE wire at the remaining terminal lug. Make sure you screw them all down securely. Attach the remaining GREEN wire to chassis (dryer frame) ground. I hope ths helps you.
