Question about Brother GX-6750 Typewriter

1 Answer

My granddaughter hit a bunch of keys on the typewriter. When I went to type something now I get a bunch of gibberish. I can type a and get an "a", but when then I get wierd characters when I type other letters and sometimes the wrong letter - for instance b types as a "p". I tried to hit Code and Reset, but that didn't fix the problem.

What do I do when my typewriter types different letters and symbols than the keys being hit

Turn the machine off then on or hold down the "code" key and hit Q "reset" key to get the machine to type the correct keys. This usually happens because something interferes with the free rotation of the printwheel. Check to be sure the ribbon and corredtion tape are installed correctly and check to be sure none of the "fingers" on the printwheel are bent outward. If a finger is bent, bend it back. If everything looks okay, the board or power supply is going bad.

MAKE? You are probably in KBII there may be a key or slide switch that controls it or a key in usually in the upper row that you need to press with the code key to get out of it.

Sounds like the daisy wheel is loose. Wiggle the daisy wheel side to side. there should be little movement. If it is loose, remove it and reinstall it. also, look for foreign objects down in the wheel printhead assembly.

If that doesn't fix it, remove the daisy wheel, unplug machine and let it rest for 20 minutes, or so. . reinstall the wheel and see what happens.

Your typewriter may just need some lubrication. using a 3 in 1 house hold oil, add a few drops to each letter arm at the bottom where it connects. If possible, use a compressed air source to blow out the entire unit (wear saftey glasses of course), the lubricate the moving key areas. This is the best case fix, worst case would be parts need replacement.
