Question about Computers & Internet

I cannot receive faxes using my fax console in WinXP. There is no dial tone. When I query the modem, the log reveals this command in the frame: AT#CLS=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED. I used to be able to receive & sent faxes from my computer. I have configured the fax several times, the Device Manager says that the modem is working.

I cannot get a dial tone on my modem to receive faxes - when queried, the modem log shows the comment AT#CLS=? COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED

I use WinXP, Fax Console - I want to receive faxes directly into my computer. Suggested solution to add a line into the commands is not possible for me, I don't know how to do it.

Is there anything else I can do to get a dial tone? Device Manager shows the modem working properly.

If the modem is working try to configure from the control panel and choose the phone line correctly ...assuming that you have a phone line ..if you are on a dsl...and another kinda cable but phone line ..this is not possible you will have to get a phone line from the ISP..

if you do not have the possibility to get a phone line from the provider ..and your internet connection is not a phone bassed ..than read this tutorial about ways to send and receive faxes on other services on the internet ..
There are domains ..similar with the free ones for email...that can provide a kinda fax service ..either to a certain number and an account ..and you receive a mail that says you have a fax..or just a paid service that delivers via internet and not by regular fax number ..probably it requires to get a fax number from a domain ..and it can be either free for some services or a paid one ..
    try this one too

Hi:
I have'nt used computer modems to fax in a long time, but will try to help, If you can edit the command line enter ATDT this command means Attention Dial Tone. Enter this command to see if you hear a Dial tone. I also suggest you try taking out the modem to reset it. let windows load without the modem in the computer then shut down windows compeletly and reinstall the modem so windows can reinstall the drivers for the hardware, if you have upgraded windows to a different version since you last faxed, then it would be wise to look for updated drivers.

    Two problems:
    1. I can't find my original WIN XP discs - I have several in either CA or WI (travel between so much I have lost them) so if I need them, I'm out of luck.
    2. I don't know how to edit the command line - do I do it in the log? How do I go back if this doesn't solve problem?
Note: I am not made of money & recently had BestBuy remove some adware for the exorbitant price of $200

Fax problem

I want to make sure I understand this completely. You get no dial tone from the fax machine when hooked up to VOIP. In the past, was there an audible dial tone from the fax, or did it just dial silently and give you an error if there was no tone? When you said you got a dial tone by connecting a phone to the ext phone port of "the machine" did you mean the fax machine? If you get a dial tone by running a phone through the fax machine, then the line is good. I have used a fax machine over Sunrocket before they went defunct, which used the same technology base as Vonage - so it should work. If you used to get an audible dial tone when using the fax, and no longer do, and you are geting a dial tone on a regular phone that is connected to the ext. port of the fax machine, then the problem has to be in the fax machine itself, not the VOIP. If you can verify that, we can go from there.

ATD 66419700 NO DIAL TONE.

That means that the modem cannot detect the correct (or any) dial tone when it picks up the line. Connect a normal; telephone to the line and lift the receiver. If you hear a normal dial tone, then the line is ok. Ithat is the case, then the modem may be faulty. You could try atz command and see what happens. If it is on a pabx or fax machine or something, the dial tone may be non-standard and teh modem won't recognise it. In that case, consult the modem manual for the AT command that tells it to ignore dial tone and dial anyway. You may have to enter that command as well as teh correct command to store that setting, alternatively you can enter the commands as an initialisation string in whatever software you are using to dial.
Hope that helps.

Plug a working phone into the jack that the fax uses using the same phone cord, and if it works the modem in the fax is bad. -Carl

Connexant modem can receive a fax but does not see

This is often caused by the wrong country setting in Windows, as different countries use different dialtones.

Make sure your computer is set correctly in Regional and Language Options in Control Panel.

In your modem settings give the command AT&FL1X3. This command will force the modem to ignore the dial tone.

I am trying to use the fax facility on my epson600fw.my isp is aol .Problem no dial tone. What connections are necessary............via printer, modem & computer ?

Typically, a fax machine is connected directly to a telephone wall jack with a known working connection. Try plugging the fax machine directly into a wall jack first and pick up the handset on the fax machine if it has one. You should get a dial tone. Then try to fax something to someone you know.

The machine can also usually be routed through the modem in a computer by connecting the "line" cord on the modem to the wall jack and plugging the fax machine into the the "phone" jack on the modem. You may need to install the software that came with the fax machine to get this to work.

If you have no dial tone, check the wall jack with a known to be working single line phone. If there is a dial tone, it's something to do with fax machine, the computer modem or the connections.

Some fax machines can take advantage of internet faxing through a cable modem or DSL connection. Check your manual for the options available.

GET "NO DIAL TONE" ERROR.

I must tell you that this is not a printer issue, since printer does not have inbuilt fax capabilities....Actually you are trying to send fax from the computer using a Data Fax Modem. Printer just used for scanning and printing documents for fax...

1. Please check if your computer have Fax modem.
Look at the back of the system tower, if you see a phone jack port (probably two of them).

2. If yes then , you need to have a telephone cable directly from wall (not the ethernet cable coming from DSL modem), fax works on analog signals which is possible only from telehone line.

If your phone line is working, there is no chance the it will give you error again for NO Dial tone

No dial tone detected

It may be a bad modem on the copier. Plug your phone into the auxillary phone port on the copier and see if you get a dial tone. Also make sure that your cord from the wall is plugged into the line port and not the phone port.

Before you begin

To pinpoint the cause of the issue, please record answers to the following questions:

Can a fax be sent or received?
Can a fax be sent, but not received?
Has the fax function ever worked in the past?

Any error messages may also help to narrow down the cause of the issues.

Print out the following:

- a settings list to view the current fax settings
- a receive log if there are issues receiving faxes
- a send log if there are issues sending faxes
- an activity log if faxes cannot be sent or received.
Initial checks
If the fax option has worked in the past and does not do so now, check that the same connection is being used and that it still works.
Check to see if any configuration settings have been changed that could have affected the fax settings.

Faxes cannot be sent/received:
If you are using a digital line, you need an analog card, an ISDN adapter, or an ADSL filter in order to send faxes.
If a PBX is being used, an ISDN Adapter/ADSL filter will not be used as these are supplied within the system. (A PBX is normally used within a company to share a small number of public lines among a large number of private ones to save on cost.) For instructions on configuring the X6100 Series machine with a PBX, see How and When to Use the PBX Option.
Check the phone line (without the printer):
Test the line by connecting a phone directly into the phone port.
Check for a dialing tone.
If you cannot hear a dialing tone, try another phone cable. Once you can hear a dialing tone, you know that the phone port is live and working.
Make sure the RJ11 cable is not damaged.
Check that the printer is accessing the dialing tone correctly:
Press the Options button on the operator panel five times until ON HOOK DIAL is displayed.
Press Select. You should hear a dialing tone.
If you can't hear a dial tone, make sure that the speaker volume is set to High. (Go to Fax, press Options eight times until SPEAKER VOLUME is displayed, then use the plus or minus buttons to change the setting to HIGH. Press Select.)
If there is still no dial tone, unplug the power cable and the phone lead, then plug them back in and try again.

Faxes can be sent but not received:
Connect the Lexmark All-in-One directly to the phone port. IMPORTANT: Do NOT connect any phones to the EXT port.
Make sure the Fax receive mode is set to answer the fax after 3 rings. (Press the Fax button on the operator panel and then press Options three times until ANSWER FAX WHEN is displayed. Change the settings using the - or + buttons as appropriate.)

Faxes can be received but not sent:
Make sure that Country Code is set correctly:
Press the Fax button on the operator panel and then press Options 15 times until Advanced is displayed.
Press Select.
Press Options 13 times and then press the + or - button until the right country is displayed.
Press Select.

IMPORTANT! These tests must be carried out with NO EXTENSIONS, i.e. phones or answering machines, connected to the EXT port on the All-In-One.
