Your carb may be gummed up. Check spark plug as well to make sure it's not fouled. How good and new is the gas and oil?

Acts like the choke is stuck closed it won't stay started and runs ruff until engine warms up then its fine. What do i do?

Well the choke has an electric part that heats up and makes the choke open in a few minutes. As soon as the engine starts the choke should open about 25 percent by way of a vac pull-off.
You can take the air cleaner off and watch the choke while someone starts the engine cold. If the choke does not open after it starts, check the choke pull-off. You can also open the choke with a screwdriver to see if the engine clears up.

I have an old slant 6 carburetta engine and when i rev the motor it blows alot of grey smoke out the tail pipe

Sounds like the valve guides are worn. They will wear excessively due to the fact that
the gas currently sold has less lead content than what was sold when these motors
were manufactured. This also affects the rings as well. You could have the heads
rebuilt with new valve guides that are designed for the new fuel. The lead acted as a
lubricant. Also given the age of that engine, I would rebuild the carbeurator as well
if it exhibits black smoke, and replace the choke during rebuild. A sticking choke
will make it hard to start and plenty of black smoke. Hope this helps.

Engine start procedure for grass trimmer 350 L x series

  • With the trimmer placed on a level piece of ground press the primer bulb about 10 times.
  • Open the choke.
  • Press the throttle and lock it in place with the lock button
  • Pull the start cord until the engine catches. It doesn't matter if it cuts out again.
  • Close the choke, and if the engine did cut out the first time, pull the start cord again. This time it should start and you can start trimming the grass. If it didn't cut out just close the choke and you're ready for trimming.

Starts but smoke bellows from the exhaust

Most likely a ring problem. Find a compression tester and see how it stacks up (115 lbs w/ starter at 5 - 6 revolutions) You can find a fitting that will let you use air and do what is called a blow down test. A fitting will fit in place of your spark plug letting you put air in the cylinder. This will show where the cylinder is leaking, rings, valves, head gasket. Must have constant air press. in the 50 - 60 lb area. you can then listen in the dip stick tube for air (that is a ring leak) or down the muffler for a leak ( valves). Also can be timing, if the engine is out of time enough, it will bog when needs more torque, and this in turn will cause an increase in oil burning. You will have to remove the flywheel and check the points / Magneto.

Thick black smoke coming out of tailpipe . Choke seems to be working ok

Your choke is working to good, to much fuel not enough air, if smoking after engine is at normal engine temp.you need to have coolant temp. sensor or your map sensor check, both act like a choke, you'll need to do a computer scan, also have engine check for a miss fire, well also cause a rich problem.
