This Tiller has a cetrifugal clutch, the tines will remain stationary until the engine speeds up, if when using the throttle the tines still do not move then I would suggest trying to adjust the clutch.

The throttle seems to be tight and working. I was using it and it was working fine when the tines just stopped. I first thought that there was a rock wedged in the tines preventing them from moving. After taking them off and cleaning the debris and placing back on, the tiller is running fine and when i squeeze the throttle it sounds fine, except that the tines still will not spin. Would very much appreciate your input.

Is the shaft from the engine to the gearbox turning when throttled, if it is then I would think something may have broken in the gearbox assembly.

With the engine off can you turn the tines with a gloved hand? Do you feel any resistance?

  • jltarzan2009 May 14, 2010

I cannot with a gloved hand turn the tines at all, they do not move. And I cannot see anything visually at all moving . I had the throttle squeezed and looked at the shaft that conects the engine to the box (is that the gearbox?) in the middle of the tines and did not see anything turning. I may not be following you exactly. Thanks for your help.

If you cannot move the tines at all then the gearbox may be seized or the end of the drive shaft could be rounded off or the clutch has had it. Sorry it's really difficult to give a proper diagnosis without actually looking at the machine. You could try your nearest Sears Service Centre for repair

I do hope you manage to find a solution soon, sorry I could not be of any further help.

The motor runs but the tines no longer turn

Does the drive shaft turn and the tines just spin around it ? if not then on the drive shaft there is a gear box and you need to open that up (without the machine plugged in) and check to see why the gears aren't meshing properly.

Ryobi ry64400 tiller tines won't move engine runs fine

then you need to open the gear box and find out why if it has a forward and reverse the the shifting linkage it could be stuck in one gear and adding the other will lock it up as well

Tines rotate slow when I try to till.

The clutch is non adjustable if the clutch fails you will have drive all the time or it slips. if the tines spin at the same speed with the engine at low and high speed the clutch might be slipping, the common cause for this is the gear box is partly siezed due to no grease being pumped into it, most ppl dont even know about this untill its too late. you have to remove the LH side tines to get to the screw.

Tiller tines will not turn. Engine runs fine...

Well hopefully it's not the transmission, as sometimes these tend to go. Another common but cheaper repair are the two bearings where the tines connect to the unit.

MORE THAN LIKELY.. The bearing is located above the worm gear housing, the part connected to the tines beneath the guard. This removal can be somewhat frustrating but if you remove it and remove the engine flange you'll be able to manually spin the drive shaft and see if it's the worm gear housing/lower bearings or if it's the more likely bearing on the clutch drum or the clutch itself.

I have power to the tines but the wheels are locked

Tines only spin in the T position.with cutch engaged. If thats not it split the case and check to see the shift fork operating properly. Or that chains are not broke. NOTE This is a serious job!!!

Stateman Tiller tine not engaging

Sounds like the worm gears are worn to the point they will not engage.
