Could be either the ptc overload relay on the compressor is weak or the compressor is locking up and drawing too much current and the ptc is shutting it off,have someone take a current reading when it starts and is running and see if its with in specs and if the current rises before it shuts down,you may be able to put on a "hard-start" kit on the compressor instead of throwing the unit out

to check the defrost timer, u can get by and test manually by placing a small screw driver into the tiny slot or hole underneath the timer and turn slowly clockwise till u hear 1 click. this will engage ur defrost cycle in about 15 minutes u should be able to come back and feel the heat in freezer as it melts the ice providing ur terminator is not bad?
Another way to test it is with a multi meter. Remove timer it from fridge and you will see 4 prongs numbered 2,1,4,3 in that order. Place ur meter prong on prong 1 & 3 (if your fridge has a capacitor wired in series with the windings, then u check for micro fares rather than OHMS) If u cannot confirm this test, still try the next.
Take ur meter prong and connect to prong 1 & 4, it should read resistance or ohms ( closed) now remove prongs and place on prong 1 & 2, this should now read infinity or open (no ohms) now take a small screwdriver place it in the tiny hole or slot under the timer. Turn it clockwise slowly till u hear 1 click. Now ur 1& 2 should read closed ( showing ohms or resistance) now place meter prongs on 1 & 4 and you it should now show open ( or no resistance - no ohms) this is how u know ur timer is good, Remember when testing for ohms ADJUST meter to use a high ohms rating in the thousands as the resistance is very high in OHMS. Hill produce refrigerator , turn off compressor and stop cooling after 5,6 hours then don't start again, I must turn off and on the main power breaker then start working for 5,6 hours I need too repe

I have a large walkin freezer and the compressor and heat strip come on at the sametime, I have to disconnet the compressor when the defrost comes on. Im not sure what wire goes where.

8145-20 is 240Volt defrost timer.
Heat strip and compressor should not activate at same time.
As a general rule heater connects to NO terminal 3 and compressor connects to NC terminal 4
NC terminal 3 compressor is on all the time until defrost cycle begins.
NO terminal 4 heat turns on when defrost cycle begins, and at same time NC terminal 3 compressor turns off.
At then end of the defrost cycle, NO terminal heat turns off and NC terminal 3 compressor turns on again.

My kenmore side by side refrigator has stopped cooling on both sides, you can here is click like the compressor is trying to run it cliks about 1 or 2 seconds then clicks again like on and off.sounds to me...


if the first three numbers are 106. on the model number it sounds like the start device on the compressor is bad,part number 8201799 and it's around 55 bucks,unplug the machine,remove the bottom back panel,you'll see the compressor,there will be a metal clip,pop it off with a screw driver and then slide the start device off the compressor,if it smells burnt or if you shake it and hear pieces rattling around it's cooked,also there's a timer in the fridge side,when you first open the freezer door the fan should blow,if it doesn't the timer could be stuck in defrost,with a screw driver you can turn the timer until it clicks and it will come out of defrost,if it starts then you have a bad timer that's stuck in defrost,but i'd put my money on the start device if the clicking is coming from the compressor area and it's not starting,let me know how you make out and as long as it's warm unplug it so you don't damage the pins on the compressor

It will run for a very short time then turn off and if you turn the defrost timer till it clicks it turns back on


The defrost timer is sticking if it only clicks a couple times before it starts. Try turning off the frig. and play with the timer, you will hear a differance in the clicking. When it has a loud click it goes into defrost and then you will hear a second loud click and it will come out of defrost and the compressor will start.If you are only hearing one loud click when you have did this before you can just replace the timer.

Maytag has a recall for compressor relay update possible fire hazard stated on notice,tech comes out and does update,now fridge wont cool. tech states that adaptive defrost timer is bad,he jumped wires...


Check the cold control thermostat for continuity.(off/on switch)
When he bypasses the wires at the board ,he also bypasses the thermostat control.

Compressor change is probably more than you wish to tackle.
1) must be certified to work with refrigerant.
2) requires silver soldering and or silver brazing.
3) requires re-charging with refrigerant and this is critical and must be measured to the oz.
If it works fine when it re-starts we need to find out what is stopping the compressor. First guess is a defrost timer. The unit goes into defrost at pre-determined intervals, depending on the defrost timer. When it goes into defrost, compressor goes off, heaters come on, and a defrost cycle is initiated. Following this, the heaters go off, (usually by a t-stat and not time), and the compressor is allowed to run again. Changing the defrost timer, which is probably one of the least expensive components, is worth a try. No guarantee, but it is a better choice than the compressor. If the tech did any tests, did he say why the compressor was questionable? Since this happens once or twice a week, it sounds like the timer or at least it is coinciding with a typical defrost cycle. Here is a possible test, when you find it blowing warm air in the freezer, advance the timer 1/4 turn cw. See if the compressor comes on when you do this. That is probably more info that you were looking for, but this is worth a try.

My Haier Mini Fridge comes on but keeps nothing cold. I defrosted in August and it worked for awhile and now it defrosted on its own and no longer gets cold.


This could be a bad defrost timer. See if the compressor is working. If it isn`t or only works sometimes. The defrost timer could be bad. When the frig goes into the defrost cycle, turns off the compressor. It may failing to turn the compressor back on after the defrost cycle. Since it stopped defrosting at one point and started again, the defrost timer may be bad. Let me know if this was any help or if I can help any farther.
