Problem for Epson PhotoPC 2100Z Digital Camera

PhotoPC 2100z & NiMH problem

By lawyer - usenet poster

" "
Hey people...

I've got a little big problem with my Epson PhotoPC 2100z digital
camera. I bought two pairs of 'good' 1600 mAh NiMHs to replace the
alkalines. Charged them overnight, put them in the camera... But it
just says "low battery" and goes to sleep. I assume it maybe can't
handle the lower voltage of the NiMHs (1,2V<1,5V)!? Epson also sells an
(expensive) NiMH pack (EU-24), but I can't really imagine that this has
a significantly higher voltage. Anyone knowing it better?

I hope someone can point me on what this is all about and if the only
way out of this is purchasing the original Epson thingie...

Thanks a lot in advance.

Have you checked the rechargeables using another battery-powered product?
There is a chance your charger didn't charge the batteries properly.

Oh damn, this is embarassing. Having read your comment, I stole my
friends voltmeter and double-checked the voltage of every single NiMH...
and...well...yeah. 3 were alright, but one was running at 0,1V. No idea
why. Right now I'm trying to re-charge it, but my charger is a pretty
trusty one, so I guess the NiMH is simply broke. Never experienced that.

Okay, to wipe all confusion away, it was *my* fault... Thanks for all
those wasted thoughts... And thanks to Ian for assuming that I acted
kinda stupid. 8) You were right!

Well, I try not to buy alkalines at all now and I occasionally have problems
with the odd battery when recharging. Using my Saitek smart charger, each
battery has a status indicator on the LCD display and sometines it lets me
know when one isn't charging. This is usually due to a bit of dirt on the
terminals - that's all; not usually the battery itself.

Well, yes. It says: "You can also use optional Ni-MH rechargeable
batteries (Model EU-24)". I'd really like to know in which way these
might differ from the ones I bought - despite the price. Can't imagine
what's so special about this. Anyone using it? I think they've already
been offering this for the older models... Should still be the same...

That's a relatively new model.  Funny how they chose 2100z for it, when the
Olympus 2100uz was such a popular camera, huh?   hmmmm

Anyway, does the camera manual say that you can use NiMh batteries with the
camera?  It's hard to imagine, but there are a few models out there (like
some of the cheaper H.P. models) that will not work with NiMhs.  Somewhere
it will tell you what type of batteries are supported (such as alkalines,
lithiums, their own, and if you can use them, NiMh).  If it does not, it's
time to call Epson unless someone else who owns that model posts here soon.

Unfortunately, some makers are going this route - making cameras that say
they can use AA-anything, but actually run very poorly on them unless you
buy an expensive proprietary battery.  My own Sony Cybershot P30 (and P50
model) are the same way.  Use 2 AA sized batteries.  Says you can use NiMh,
but their life is extremely short - but they "suggest" you use their own $60
info-lithium battery.  Could be that Epson followed this route with this
camera.
