Troy Bilt 34073 mower - stripped spindle-shaft?

Tried changing blades, but one came loose when engaged and the blades crashed into each other. Now, replacing the damaged blades, one won't tighten. It feels like it's getting tighter, then it releases. Stripped?

Bet on it- you might try adding an additional nut of the right size/thread or several washers to utilize the remaining healthy threads.

Ran over a tree root and bent a blade. Replaced blades. Checked belts. Belts are fitting loosely. Mower won't shift into gear fwd. or bkwd. Transmission not engaging. What might be the problem?

The gear would, obviously, have been engaged when you hit the root. I presume this will have caused some resistance in the friction material of your transmission. Consider the engine rotating the trans and the root stopping it from rotating, the transmission and the blade will have borne the brunt . Have your transmission checked for damage

What causes fuse to blow every time I try to engage blades?

To engage the blades is it a knob to an electric switch that you pull?
If so does the wire from the switch activate a electric clutch?
Is the wire damaged and shorted to the frame, is the clutch shorted. If you provide the brand name and model number I might be able to find a schematic for your mower.

Video shows an electric clutch but yours may be different but this should give you an idea of where to look. Riding Mower Electric PTO Clutch Won Engage When Hot Problem Fix

One blade is grinding the dirt when they are engaged

First check for a bent blade Then check for a broken spindle. Then check for broken metal on the deck or a broken/ disconnected deck hanger.
