Are PC power supplies generic?

I may need to replace a PC's power supply. Are off-the-shelf power supplies generic? Or specific to a PC manufacturer and model? The PC is an Acer M5100.

According to Acer's website:

http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/desktop/0000/Acer/AspireM5100/AspireM5100sp2.shtml

The computer uses an industry standard 250W power supply so yes as long as you buy one that has all the connectors you need then you'll be fine.

Hello. get you broken power supply re manufactured at http://www.invebo.com . The parts that fail are replaced with industrial grade long-life components and if your power supply is unsafe or too far gone then they supply you a new one. Vergy green and shipping by airmail isn't too expensive.

Since you have to purchase a new video card then I would go ahead and get one and see what happens. Worst case, you'll have to go buy a bigger power supply.

Green light in rear flashing won't part up

The green light flashing is a diagnostic LED light, telling you there is a power failure.
More specifically a bad Power Supply.
Weak voltage power rail.

The Power Supply used in a Compaq Presario SR1010Z desktop computer, is a 300 Watt unit, and is an ATX form factor.

[ATX form factor for a Power Supply, denotes the size of the Power Supply case, and the shape.
It is approximately 6 inches Long, 6 inches Wide, and 3-1/2 inches Tall.
The ATX form factor for a Power Supply is used in over 90 percent of the personal computers out there, and is as readily available as the air we breathe]

Usually, HP uses one of three generic Power Supply manufacturers.
1) Bestec
2) Delta
3) HiPro

All are low quality Power Supply manufacturers.

This is HP Support, and the main menu page for the Compaq Presario SR1010Z desktop computer,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=1146324&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=7&submit.x=6&lang=en&cc=us

If you click on Manuals, then on Upgrading and Servicing Guide on the following page, there are instructions on how to open your computer case.

This is instructions on how to replace a Power Supply, from HP Support,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01356113&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3548196

(It's for a Pavilion a6230n desktop computer, but after you open the computer case of your Compaq Presario SR1010Z, the instructions are the same)

What Power Supply would I recommend?
There are 100's to chose from.
This is but one example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276575&CatId=1078

Chosen because;

1) Maximum wattage is rated at 450 Watts.

A computer ONLY uses the power it needs, and NO more.
Wouldn't matter if you had a 10,000 Watt power supply, (No such thing. An exaggeration), if your computer only needs 100 Watts, it would only use 100 Watts.
(Surfing the internet typically uses 100 watts)

2) Has all the power cables you'll need, and more. Tie up the power cables you do not need. (Use plastic ties, Not wire, or bread wrapper ties)

3) 24 Amperes (24A) on the 12 volt power rail.

4) 135mm cooling fan.
The cooling fan on the Power Supply you have now is 80mm.

A larger fan turns slower. Produces as much air as a smaller fan, (Or more), but makes less noise.
Less wear on the fan's bearings also.

5) Is an ATX form factor Power Supply.

6) It's 80 percent efficient, compared to the 60 percent efficient Power Supply you have now.
(That is, if it was working)

Sa-ak17 displays f 61

First, stop feeding it fuses until you determine the cause. Every time you blow a fuse you're stressing something in line with it.

We'd need some specific details about the sub and how it is being driven to even begin to answer the question.

My guess is you did something with the sub that is NOT recommended by the manufacturer. Shelf systems are generally not designed to be mix-n-match with other speaker components.

The F61 means "Check and correct the speaker cord connections. If this does not fix the problem, there is a power supply problem. Consult the dealer".

A blown fuse IS a power supply problem. You might look for a hands-on tech to give it a sniff and a look for whatever got cooked.

Nakamichi Power supply

Since you didn't post your message as a comment on another entry, the person you asked never saw the message.
If your system is dead, it is surely the power supply. Your system probably uses a 'switched mode' type of supply; these are fussy about certain components being of the highest quality and there are a flood of supply failures on this message board from all kinds of consumer electronics and the schematics needed to repair them are generally not available since many manufacturers outsource their power supplies and the companies that make them are often only a step above a garage operation.
If you haven't done it yet, you may have some luck buying a replacement supply from Nakamichi. If the supply manufacturer hasn't cleaned up their product, the new one may not last any longer.

Laptop battery and AC adapter

Replace the power supply first, chirping is not good, and if the supply has a low output it could be putting out just enough to run the machine and not enough to charge the battery. Starving the machine for power can damage the machine or the battery, so, you may still need a battery, but you won't know until you replace the supply. If you do need a battery, aftermarket or generic batteries are fine. I've used them and had no problems. Many times you'll find that the aftermarket batteries are made by the same company that the laptop manufacturer uses, they just don't have the label, it's this way with damn near all the laptop manufacturers.
