Harley davidson fatboy electrical problem

Speedometer and odometer goes in and out when giving the bike throttle. Have replaced speedometer and speed sensor, lines to spark plugs and still problem not fixed. Don't know what else to check?

    Looking to buy a 99 night train. Noticed the speedometer worked when I took off, but quit working once reached somewhere around 50, needle just keeps going higher. Even when I stopped, doing 100. Told the guy, he turn the power back on, pushed the button on the side of the speedometer and the needle goes back to 0. He says it just started doing that, doesn't know why. Can you tell me what's wrong and how much money we're talking about? Thanks a lot!

Check your brain bro. I mean your bikes brain. Its right under your ****. hmm. anyhoo the connections get funky and those after market pipes you had to have make it vibrate and then the connections don't connect. quit throwing parts at it and look at what you got. throttle input equals erratic behaviour. vibrations shouldn't affect the components you changed but they will wreak havoc on the connections inbetween

1999 Harley Davidson diagnostic codes

Hi Anonymous, if you have a 2003 or older Harley Davidson here is how you can access the Diagnostic Fault Codes through your speedometer.
The reset switch is used to change the odometer display between mileage and trip values and to reset the trip odometer. It is also used to identify the speedometer calibration and to enter the diagnostic mode, clear diagnostic codes and exit the diagnostic mode.
The Diagnostic Mode is entered by holding down the odometer reset button with the "off/run" switch in the run position, turn the ignition from OFF to ON and wait for the fuel pump to stop priming then let go of the reset button. The normal power-up sequence will occur and before entering the diagnostic mode diagnostic codes set during this power-up sequence will be stored as well. When in the diagnostic mode the odometer will display the first diagnostic code. When the trip switch is pressed again the next code will be shown. If the trip switch is pressed for more than 5 seconds at any time while in the diagnostic mode, the diagnostic code displayed will be erased.
There are 7 different diagnostic codes available:
d01 - Speed sensor power output shorted low
d02 - Speed sensor power output shorted high or open
d03 - Not Used
d04 - Not Used
d05 - Speed sensor return shorted high
d06 - Speed sensor return shorted low
d07 - Not Used
d08 - Speedometer power over voltage
d09 - Speed output shorted high
d10 - Speed output shorted low or open
CAL XX - Speedometer application calibration number:
14 = Domestic
15 = HDI
When in the diagnostic mode, all codes are displayed in sequence from d01 to d10.
As a code appears in the display (for instance d02), it will read
"d02Set" if set or "d02CLr" if clear.
You can exit the diagnostic mode by turning ignition from ON to OFF to ON again without depressing the reset switch or if a speed signal greater than 5 MPH is detected.
Diagnostics cannot be performed if system voltage is less than 9 VDC or greater than 16 VDC. The only exception is d08 which is set when system voltage is greater than 16 VDC.
After all the diagnostic codes are displayed, the speedometer
Calibration number is displayed example CAL 14 if you change rear wheel size or gearing you need to visit your local Dealership to have your speedometer recalibrated.

Later Harley's (like your husbands) have a system that when the ECU (Electrical Control Unit) senses something wrong, it goes into "limp home" mode, where top speed is limited to 20-25 MPH, just enough to "limp home"

First, he needs to check the error codes, or TDCs (Trouble Diagnosis Code(s)).

I have a 2008, but the method might be the same for a '09.
Make sure the right hand handlebar kill switch is in the "RUN" position.
While holding in the odometer reset button, turn ignition switch to "ON".
All instrument and warning lights should illuminate, and the speedometer should sweep all the way to maximum, then back to "0" MPH.

Scroll through the readings (where the odometer displays) with the reset button, writing down any error codes.

My '04 Fatboy speedo does the same thing. I leave it in the sun for a while, the fog evaporates. Because your bike may still be under warranty, there's a chance the factory will replace your speedo.

Speedometer & odometer quit working after battery was changed out

Sounds like a speed sensor problem. Did you plug it back in when you were done? If so, remove the part of the sensor that goes into the trans. Check the magnet on the end for metal filings. If there is a lot of filings, clean them off and reinstall the sensor. Ride the bike and see if that solves the problem. If not, you may possibly need a new sensor.

2001 harley fatboy caugh and pops back through throttle body when cold. runs find when hot.

If you try to ride the bike or rev the engine up while it's cold, this is normal. Most engines will do this because the mixture is lean for a cold engine. When you start the engine, allow the engine to warm until it goes into the slower idle speed.
