The 9th addition of the asd steel manule has a coversion chart in it's index from inches in one foot to tenths of that same foot. Ie. 1'' = .o8' like 4'' = .333' of a foot. I would like an on line access. I could duplicate this by duing my own arithmatic. However I'm lazy and is'nt that what the net is all about. William

Then, you can use REXX as a programming-language.

Use NOTEPAD to put the following lines into a file named 'lazy.txt':

Can you tell me where the asd relay is located


one more Guessyah question, where is... easter egg hunts
if you read the manual its clear. (posted 100s of times here)
or read the door index in the PDC box it lists the ASD there.,
1993 to NOW.
here we go posted 100s of times.
the ASD can drop out for 8 reasons,, scanning the PCM finds that easy. if you dont scan it ,i bet you never find why it drops.

there is no need to post complex PDC wiring using words, omg hard....
the link1 above has the full schematic, every inch off it.
read the schematic and see that the PCM controls the ASD !
at all times.

2004 jeep GC stalls out after running awhile.Changed fuel pump still have stalling problem

why guess?

ill assume the full 60k mile tune up was done.

you picked the most hard fix of all and guessed wrong, wow.

if the engine is good, compression great.

there are only 3 causes of stalls, in pure Physics. bla bla....

in reality parts wise over 50,, guessing is not going to work.



what does worK? diagnosis, want to test or guess.?

on all jeeps we have this funny thing called ASD,

but first, i must ask a key question. can your right FOOT save the stall if it gets happy footed , at the stall point?????? bid deal important that.?????



ill pretend NO, for THAT.( post the facts ,im showing real tests , and real results here) yours will vary.....



lost spark?, is the cause, not fuel.? (efi cuts fuel for loss of spark in the ECU LOGIC, so spark is first ,if hot compression is not dropping)

but id check the ASD next or drive with a scan tool attached (any) and see the PCM/ECU tell you why it stalled ! , it will 1/2 the time.



in addition to that, the ASD relay must be monitored, (scan tool will do same)

if the RELAY DROPS? then we know why , see?

if the ASD did not drop, then it starved for fuel. (compression good)

Examples more./......

say , you get no DTC errors (scanned), and ASD holds fast,. at stall?

more examples::::

does it starve for fuel with gas cap loose , then wrong cap

its missing the vacuum breaker inside, a 5 buck fix. and kids can change it. or worse?, caused it.LOL

More examples:

we use a fuel pressure guage at the fuel rail (TOOLS RULE)

if the pressure drops, at stall , and not ASD drop.?

then you have bad wiring from the fuel pump relay to the tank pump.

or a bad relay. the volt meter will prove that.. easy.

very common on all EFI cars, bad wiring, and 10x that in the salt belts.

google salt belt, or wiki it.



this is how all 1993 jeep to present run. ASD is first to watch , hint.!

ASD dont drop:

if fuel pressure is good?, then wrong tree to bark up.

if fuel pressure was low, check voltage to pump cranking

must be 12v, or 11, if cold and battery weak

less voltage , is BAD. fix bad. (clean connections.)



only takes 3 tools.



  1. volt meter


  2. compression gauge.


  3. fuel pressure gauge.


a vacuum gauge part of a hand vacuum pump is nice.

most fail paths can be found with minimal tools. about 60 bucks worth. in any DIY shop.



and sorry , you cant fix modern cars with out a scan tool

buy, rent or barrow one. they are everywhere.

How to test the asd relay on a 2003 dodge caravan 3.3l engine


This can be done with a ohm meter, but you need a chart of the internal wiring. Better, if there is another exactly the same relay you could swap them to test.

CANN,T FIND SHUT DOWN FUSE


fuses are easy to test. DMM in hand.
Ohms 101:
set to low resistance (dial) Rx2 or as low as it goes..
then check fuse. 0 ohms is good, infinity (OR/OL) is bad.

now the rules of ASD.

got spark cranking?
got spark for 2 seconds cranking,
is the ASD closing for 2 seconds, the drops out cranking?

there are many fuses to get EFI running , on all cars.
fuse 6,11,16,21 all kill it.

the fSm is the deal working on any car FSM free, is a head against wall experience. and 100x that today.

Runs for an hour then will not start act like its vapor locked


its EFI they dont vapor lock , like carbs, not at all.
so lost spark, test spark on all cylinders.
if you lost it all , you dropped the ASD relay?
if you have spark try test fuel,. (spray)
im now posted this everytime , no spark. my 3 time now, trying to reach a new record..... LOL
no scan , tool so on your car , you do the CEL falsh code deal.

ASD "automatic shut down relay"
what is it?
it cuts fuel (and spark) if the PCM thinks, there is any danger of crash and burn.
The PCM drops the ASD for many reason, this list is all years. (some are missing on early years)

1: sees the spark weak or dead on the ignitor or coil primary pin. (it knows spark is bad)
2: Crank sensor bad. or misfiring. CKP
3: cam sensor bad, or misfiring , CMP.
4: ASD input read back pin fails. (PCM commanded it but it refused to do its job)
5: same ASD output fails. i commanded it but the relay is bad. dead.
6: Immoblizer active. (failing or bad key etc,)


if the ASD drops driving or even parked idling
one of the above caused it.

the ASD has engine startup logic that is unique to JEEPs.
you must crank with in seconds or the key on is ignored by many jeeps.
you crank and the above 6 must not fail during the start event or it cuts the ASD.

note carefully, if spark is bad cranking, the ASD cuts spark 100% more dead.(funny, but very true ,read the ASD schematic)

you only get 2 seconds to get the 6 factors true or the game is all over.
if when driving, it sees one of the 5 fail, ASD drops.
in fact ASD can drop then come back. while drive, people say it cuts out.

if true, using any dirt cheap scan tool will show why,

DTCs tell you. Cmp /ckp or spark dead.
pending or live DTC
freeze frame, dtc will show what failed.
and even seeing RPM drop like a rock, faster than any crankshaft can spin down, dig?

or loss of 12vdc power to the PCM , does all this above. DIES.

great question the ASD, a key relay to sustained starts and running.
and told the engine, bravo !!!
post the DTC error code.
The ASD can drop out for many reasons, post all DTC codes
and never forget, crank for 5 seconds then look for DTCs
and pendings....

1997 jeep starts than quits


stalls. (do the 60k tune up yet?)
which engine? (cylinder count and displacment)
On jeeps ,we have to monitor the ASD relay. (finger pressed to case)
i try to prevent the stall with a fast right foot action, and with a scan tool see what happens, that is how i do this.
and if the ASD drops out below say 700RPM that means
the ECU dropped it ,due to ERRORS.
the scan tool will show these. errors. clearly
CMP or CMP dead, spark loss. (at least 3 ways,,,, to drop)
the ECU is programmed (hard logic) to drop the ASD if there are any errors that can cause a fire, and if yes, cuts the ASD, and this kills the injectors dead as a doornail. no fuel , no fire, and no lawsuits. dig?

Have you checked the ASD (Automatic Shut Down) Relay? Check to see if that is getting power. Then check to see if the ASD Relay itself is good. You do not have to use any special tools/knowledge to check this. You can change this Relay out with another Relay that is the same shape and type on a function that is known working. For example: Check to see if your Front Windshield Wipers are working. Change out the ASD Relay with this Front Windshield On/Off Relay. Check the Wipers again. If it does not work, then the ASD Relay is bad. With the Front Wiper Relay in the ASD now check for power to the Fuel Pump Relay.
One additional fact: IF the Crankshaft Position Sensor is bad the Engine will not operate at all, meaning there will be no power sent to anything including the fuel pump relay!
