Problems with my Sony cybershot Dsc-s600

My digital camera suddenly stopped working. When I turn it on it beeps and on the screen it says: "Turn the power off and on again".
When I do so it does the same thing over again.
I also noticed that when I turn it off the lens cover does not close over the lens. It makes a little movement like it tries to but it doesn't.
Any help I can get I am grateful for!

Ok. Where do I start? Do I have to open the camera? there's 2 small screws at the bottom.
If I can get it open I suppose I should look where the lens is, correct?

  • Pacis Mar 30, 2008

Ok. I got it open and as I pulled the two parts apart the lens cover closed. I see no damaged gears... I blew into the camera and now I am trying to close it... which is proving to be a doozie of a job.

When I get this done I can tell you if it worked or not. If it doesn't work I think I will just buy a new one.

  • Pacis Mar 30, 2008

It is not working because the lens juts out... Probably the mechanism that makes the lens go back inside is not working.

    Is this repairable?

    Thanks for your help.

    :-) I understand about the ****

I think I will go ahead and get a new one. I saw on the internet that a new cybershot costs about 120. That isn't so bad.

Anyways, thanks ALOT for your help!

The mechanical part that is trying to close the lens cover is having a problem

Possibly

1. a lodged piece of foreign material

2. A broken piece within the camera is interfering

3. A piece in the camera that helps control the lens or another piece by the lens is out of place

Please check this out if you are comfortable doing so and let me know what comes of it

Thank you

you could also first try forcing the cover to close, but be careful not to break it, this could correct it right away

There is a motor assembly that is part of the lens assembly in the
camera. Inside this motor assembly there are a few custom gears that
are hard to find. When a gear gets damaged, the camera is able to
detect the motor spinning and monitor that the lens is not moving. This
causes that error message to display on the screen.

Depending on the extent of the damage of the gear and which gear
broke (their are two typical ones, which are replaceable), some users
may be able to get passed this occasionally. This can occur if only 1
tooth of the gear is broke. Eventually the teeth next to the broken
tooth will break because of how the gears are connected to each other.
This usually can be noticed by a grinding noise when you turn on the
camera. If all you hear is a motor humming, then one of the gears is
    damaged as well.

Unfortunately, the fix depends on how the gears where damaged. If
the gears were damaged because the camera was dropped on its lens, it
could be possible that the lens itself is now crooked and even
replacing the gears will not fix the problem (the lens will physically
get stuck and redamage the replacement gears). If the gears broke over
normal use (which is what happen to me), they can be replaced and all
    should work again.

If it is a piece of sand or something else small, you can first try blowing it out with a can of compressed air or gently bumping the camera a little otherwise the above problem is common also with this camera

I would try to first move the lens cover back
if this doesn't work then I would try a can of compressed air and gently bumping it even though moving the cover may dislodge any piece first.

Otherwise I would open the camera by unscrewing the screws that you mentioned and yes should should look where the lens is, mainly around the motor and gears that control the lens cover

It is repairable but will be a pain in the **** because of how small the parts are, if you want to repair it I will help you with what I can, but if you are having too much trouble, new cameras aren't too expensive anymore and if you can't fix it and still want to keep it, a camera repair shop should be able to help you out

Go through the system menu of your camera. Though I don't know the cybershot: on all cameras I had and have there was / is a menu item "Shutter sound on/off"

DSC-W50 sony cybershot

I had the same problem with my DSC-W55. I actually just called the customer service number on the sony website and they told me how to solve the problem.

- Take your battery out
- Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds
- Re enter your battery
- Voila.. it should work when you turn it on. Mine did.

Sony cybershot dsc-s600

Hi, here is a temporary solution that might work for you as it did for me:

1: turn on the camera in picture/movie review mode
2: turn the screen off (not the camera)
3: change from review picture/movie mode to take picture/movie mode
4: turn the screen back on.

You should now be able to take pictures and record.

Hope this is of some help.
