Question about Refrigerators
Hi y'all is it possible to buy and replace a thermostat for the fridge part of the FC40RX? Smeg Fridge Freezer myself? In the recent weeks I have noticed that although the freezer part works perfect and the light of the fridge still works I cannot alter the fridge temperature using the 7 settings. The temperature is warmish and food is not keeping as well as it used to plus a smell is developing. ( I put a plate of bicarbonate of soda in it) Because of where the fridge freezer unit is standing it happened that the surrounding temperatures were colder than the fridge itself I wondered whether that has confused the 'thermostat' or broke it? Could that be the problem? I love the fridge freezer and had it for 14 years and look well after it. I would like to repair it if possible. I don't know where the thermostat is please let me know and if I can replace it. Are there schematic/technical drawings available online? Please advise I'd be most grateful. Best regards Sabine Kazich

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS METHOD UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND ELECTRICAL SAFETY. The thermostat is behind the cooling element at the back of the fridge compartment and it connected to the dial at the top front of the compartment that controls its temperature setting. Remove the front plate to access the switch and you will see the wiring that goes to the thermostat. Connect the two wires to the thermostat and if the fridge does not start the thermostat is faulty. Replacements are available, but you may need to do some hunting on line. With the power off this time, securely tie a few feet of string around the thermostat wiring at the switch. carefully loosen the cooling element to free the thermostat and pull it free. Now tie the string to your new thermostat and pull the string back through so the wiring is pulled into place. Put everything back the way you found it and, after a short while, enjoy a nice cold drink.

Oncce the fridge was shut off and left for a while the cooling had come back . If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
If after about 6 hours you observe cooling it is possible that the defrost timer is faulty.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if Ice forms then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
replace the defrost timer, heater or thermostat one you have confirmed to eliminate one by one.
