Question about Toshiba 43H70 43" Rear Projection Television

Convergence without a remote control

Hi. I am trying to fix a friends Toshiba 43H70 that has severe convergence problems. Without any input, just looking at the menu, the text is written three times (red, green blue) and is bowing severely. S-video and composite from a dvd player also have this problem.

I replaced the STK392-110's with STK392-180's and I checked the big power resistors for opens but they measured ok. Now when I power the TV on, The convergence still looks pretty bad but at least it does not shut down after 3 minutes like before I replaced the chips.

My question is how bad does the convergence look after you change the IC's but before you make any calibration? My friend can not find the remote, and I can not figure out how to get into the convergence menu with just the front panel of the TV. Do I need the factory remote? Could I use a universal remote if I had the right code?

Thanks for any advice. This is a great board.

Wow That was fast! Thank you so much for that info. I will have him tear his house apart to find it, but it's good to know about www.replacementremotes.com. I will post my results after I have a factory remote.

    Thank you again Slinteriors

I still do not have a factory remote, but I was able to get into the
service menu with a universal remote. When I ran the Self Diagnostic,
the power section which should read "Power :000"

instead reads "Power :003" (see photo). In the service manual it calls
this the Operation Number of Protection Circuit (current limiter). I'm
not sure how to interpret this.

Then I went into the Convergence Adjustment menu to display a cross
hatch pattern (see photo). As you can see in the photo it looks pretty
bad. I am able to move the Red, Green and Blue color lines both
horizontally and vertically. Of course I only moved the lines enough to
see that I can move them. I put them back to their original location
when I was done, and I did not save anything.

Hopefully someone will see the pictures I posted and will have an idea on this problem.

    Thanks

    George

Slinteriors, Once again, thanks for your help. I measured the + & - voltage going to the convergence amps on pins 4 and 5.
On pin 4 the schematic shows -15.9v and I read -14.6v
On pin 5 the schematic shows +15.8v and I read +16.07.

That -14.6v does not sound good. The + & - 15v are coming from the same bridge rectifier on the power supply board. I will do some investigating.

I will also pull the 1.2 ohm power resistors from the convergence circuit and measure them for the correct tolerance.

    I will report back tomorrow.

    Thanks again
    George

I pulled all 6 power resistors out of the circuit and measured them with my low ohms meter. All resistors measured the same weather in the circuit or out. Unfortunately my low ohms meter is reading EVERYTHING low right now, but at least I see a consistent reading on all the resistors. I doubt they are all bad.

I still need to track down this voltage drop on the -15.9v circuit. At the source from the bridge rectifier I am getting the +16.55v & -16.04v but by the time it ends up at the convergence IC's it drops to +16.07v & -14.50v

Still no luck with this bad boy. I pulled the bridge rectifier out and checked it with my digital meter. It uses +5v for the diode test. Bridge looks good. No opens or shorts, and the four diodes inside read the same bias. There are two 3300mf caps on the plus and minus side of the bridge. Maybe one of them is leaking. I will swap them and see what happens.

I hope I'm not chasing a wild goose here. It would make sense that both the positive and negative voltages going to the convergence IC's should be pretty close, not off by 1.5v

Would it hurt the convergence IC's if I removed the positive and negative voltages going to them, then power up the set to take readings?

You will need the origional remote you can get one fast through this link just enter the model number www.replacementremotes.com
its normal after an IC change for the convergence to need adjusting, universal remotes can sometimes do it, but i have only seen that happen once or twice usually they wont have the right feature to adjust then save the settings.

youre getting too much current to the convergence circuit. I would suspect the regulator for the convergence power supply. Did you check the convergence resistors out of circuit, as they can only be out of tolerance by 5 % any more can cause this type of severe convergence and also allow the current to rise.

you may have a leaky diode in that circuit.

know it wont affect the ICs

My Toshiba 43H70 started having the blue bow up at the bottom. Green and red are good. Convergence will move it a little, but not enough. Any ideas?

Your convergence has failed and needs to be repaired. Once quick test is to goto your convergence menu and see if you can adjust red and blue. If not its has failed and needs to be fixed. You can call in a repair shop or you can get the parts and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com and do the repair yourself. Its a fairly easy DIY fix.

Problems after convergance IC fix

try not to mix areas in the tv chasing several problems.
  1. Lets get back: i hope the tv was doing fine before to start digging into it ( was it?) Was the tv complete tested before to make sure the buttons were working all and the audio was there. I mean each part of your tv has different solutions:
Think you have an animal with several heads now:
  • the buttons in the panel (some working is good! some others can be replace and there it go all panel works)
  • audio mute (maybe no signal and automatic mute is there. or maybe really audio is damaged. Leave it at the end is another area.
  • Touch focus is the the program controlling convergence digitally talking. If the tv is not yet fix with the amplifiers then the problem still landed in another area not in the digital control.
Finally Start over! Get into de convergence and get your three tubes at least close to convergence (forget auto focus now) three screens together or almost but three rectangules with white noise. No having GUI you mean OSD (i gess) (on screen display) channels appearing when you push that button or audio level line or menu letters (several buttons have to be touch to make sure of there is not OSD.

if the tv has not white noise the screens are without convergence. you are digging in a set with maybe 5 problems the three you told me plus the other posibilities im gessing and i hope you don't have. So slow down with the repair and try step by step. bye now.

Convergence problems on right side of toshiba 43h70 43

Hello, its very possible there are other color alignments thats out of ajustements and certain color lines will affect each range of alignment and
you will need a tech to come out and check the control unit on your set.

I've been getting parts lately from http://www.partstore.com/ and they seem to be reliable and trustworthy. The Part will probably only cost probably around $5-10 a convergence chip and a couple hours of labor.

Resetting convergence daily on Toshiba 43h70

Hi Mark, tough call without putting a scope to the circuit, either the convergence IC`s are going bad, signal from DCU is going bad (digital convergence unit), or possibly bad solder somewhere in the convergence circuit, I`m afraid your going to need a tv tech for that problem, BMW Rider
