Question about Computers & Internet
My Dell 1721 laptop appears to have overheated and will not turn on. The fan will start and run for about 5 seconds and then turn off.

There's no easy solution for the laymen on this one. All Dell's come apart the same way for the most part. If you go to Dell's site & either enter the service tag or just select your model. Download the tech service manual for a reference. Before you start the next step, take the ram cover off & take a stick of ram out one at a time & try to boot. If it boots that ram stick is faulty. Now for the quick instructions for dissasembly. Disconnect all power, a/c & battery. Using a small flat screwdriver, like a jeweler's, remove the hinge cover above the keyboard. Remove the keyboard, taking note to the ribbon cables for the mouse pad & keyboard. Turn the unit upside down & remove all screws, some maybe under rubber or plastic cosmetic plugs. On most you can leave the hard drive in, if it's easier, just pop it out. Flip the unit back over & the large plastic with the mouse pad & such should pop off with limited effort. Now some have a metal shield covering the guts, remove the 2 or 3 screws holding that in place. There should be a nice, clear shot at the cpu heatsink & fan. You'll need a tube of thermal paste found at the local radio shack to do this part. Remove the 4 screws holding the heatsink/fan assembly & wiggle it off the cpu, also unplug the fan. Seperate the the fan from the rest of the heatsink & use compressed air(dust off) to blow the giant glob of dust that is probably in there out. Put a dot the size of a bb of thermal paste in the center of the cpu & re-install the heatsink/fan assembly on to the cpu. Before you put it all back together, simply plug the battery in or a/c adapter & power the unit on. If it makes it longer than 5 seconds & you can see the cpu fan working, then it's fixed. If not, it's too late for this motherboard. See if there's any warranty left on the laptop by going to Dell's site & entering in the service tag number.
