Question about Dell Vostro 1710 Laptop

1 Answer

I have a Vostro 1710, My problem is either the power pack or the power socket on the laptop, When i turn on my computer it stays on for a max of 1min before switching off again (then have to pull the battery out and put it back in, then plugging in the power for it to work again). But continues to only last 1 min. I pulled out the power once switched on and comes up with low battery warning. The power plug once plugged in seems to have a fair bit of movement (not the connection it self). I know my way around computers quite well and very good with a soldering iron. Im just wondering if there is a guide or diagram that shows the internals of either the power pack or the laptop power socket?

Lets do some troubleshooting first before we start taking it apart, can you get the battery charged on another laptop?

If your battery is charged, plug it in and turn on the laptop, if its fully charged and it still repeatedly turns off after 1 minute, this is not a power socket / jack issue.

As for a diagram of the power jack/socket, it has 2 pins, generally, one on the center and another at the side. then the jack is also held in place on the board with atleast 2 to 4 solder contacts that possibly go through the board and come out the other side, but those are basically just ground, and hold it in place.

Hi Ekse thanks for your quick reply,

Yes the battery will charge on another laptop, but after i replace it, it slowly runs out its definitely not charging.

With the power jack/socket will i have to get to it from the bottom of the laptop or can i get to it from the keyboard side? Is there a step by step guide for this?

I also noticed the power cable coming out of the power pack is also loose, is there a special tool i need to open the power pack or does it clip together?

    Thanks again.

So with the battery charged on another laptop, while it has power, does your laptop turn on and work until the battery runs out? about 30 minutes or 1 hour or more.

if your laptop turns off with a fully charged battery 1 one minute, you have a more serious problem.

getting to the power plug you need to disassemble the whole laptop, the motherboard will need to be removed from its casing, the whole laptop comes apart into a dozen of parts.

in your case the DC in plug - power plug is a set of wires that go to the board, you can see this on the service manual picture, it is very easily replaced and does not require soldering. But. I suspect this might not be the issue your having.

  • kingspeedy May 14, 2010

Takes an hour or so depending on how much i use it to go flat again after charging it on another laptop.

If you don't think DC in plug on the board, is it the power pack itself?.

The reason why i though it was the DC in plug is if i wiggle it there is allot of movement.

Okay, so if your laptop works for a hour with a charged battery the laptop is then fine, use a multimeter to check the voltage on the charger plug, make sure it is + / - 0.25 of the indicated voltage, if it is lower of that, it may be faulty. Another test you can do is to hook it up to a 24volt car light bulb, first you solder two wires to the lamp, and then connect them appropriately to the plug, if the light is not steady, (measure voltage at the same time) or if the voltage drops, the charger is bad, replace it.

if the charger checks out, the issue might be the plug on the laptops end.

Ive wired up a test light and the light did not dim, It was consistent. I left my Multimeter at work so i cant check the voltage. So its looking like it might be the plug on the laptop end, would you agree?

    Most likely.

How do I unlock my keyboard on my dell Vostro 1710 computer

I'll assume your keyboard was fully functional, then something happened (not involving a liquid spill or other physical damage), and now your keyboard seems to be dead. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I take it that your computer makes it through the bootstrapping process and successfully completes POST before Windows(?) takes over.

Based on those assumptions, I think you tripped a security "feature" by accident, which can be disabled either through a specific combination of keys (e.g. ctrl + alt + del), or by entering BIOS configuration (commonly f12, f2, or del).

Finally, it is possible you will need to drain all power from the machine by unplugging the charger, removing the big laptop battery, and then removing the CMOS battery by taking off the RAM or HDD panel on the underside of the laptop. If this is required, I suggest waiting at least 15 seconds before replacing the batteries.

Does my Dell Vostro 1710 have a webcam?

It is an optional extra on this laptop according to dell link below.
the webacam is located at the top center of the screen if it is installed when you shine a torch in there you should see the lens like a camera on your mobile.

I would also check the device manager and see if anything appears in there. Perhaps drivers need to be installed.
