Question about Whirlpool Ultimate Care II LSQ9564J Top Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a problem with a Whirlpool top loading washing machine. Whilst filling with water, the water runs straight out of the drain pipe. Help with this problem will be most sincerely appreciated as I live in a remote rural area where one has to fix ones own appliances.

You may be experiencing a condition known as "siphoning". This is caused by the drain hose not being high enough off the floor, or not having a proper air gap at the standpipe in order to drain properly. This creates a suction and the washer will constantly drain (siphon) as it tries to fill. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3575830-how_to_prevent_washer_siphoning

In the majority of the cases, this problem is attributed to improper installation, rather than an actual problem with the washer. If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

The wash keeps running water, never fills up

Your drain hose is to far down in the stand pipe or your stand pipe is to low, your stand pipe should be roughly the same height as the top of your washer if it is pull your hose out of the drain pipe it has probably just went down to far, it only need to be about 8 inches in the pipe, it is siphoning the water out, that is what your problem is.

I have a very old (16 yrs +/-) whirlpool washer that tries to fill with water, but seems to drain straight out. Unfortunately, the first time I noticed the problem, I started a load of wash and left...when...

You probably have a floor drain rather than a drain pipe which is higher than the pump. hold the drain hose up while its filling or make it go up (about as high as half the machine height) before it goes back down to the drain. (At least to check it out) The pumps shouldn't siphon out but some do.

Water runs straight through to drain hose

Has the drain hose been moved?  The outlet of the hose needs to be higher than the top of the tub to prevent water siphoning out.

Water siphoning out the drain line
If the water is continues to fill and water is draining while it is filling or agitating, Check the height of the stand pipe. It should be about 36" above the floor. If the height is correct it may need to have an anti-siphoning valve installed into the drain line.

Whirlpool Washer - Imperial Series Quiet Wash 2

your washers drain hose is too far down the drain pipe which is causing a siphoning action pull the washers drain hose out pipe some you should be able to hear water dropping into the pipe the reason it only happens in the rinse cycle is because the water from wash is being drained and before the water vacuum is broken the rinse water comes in causing it to keep draining

Calypso - water goes straight to drain hose-not drum

the hose may still be filled from last cycle. try to put machine in final spin mode where all water from previous wash will be spun out the drain hose. once a siphon is started it can only be stopped by introducing air into the drain hose.
