Question about Nintendo DS Lite Console

My DS lite will not charge. when i plug in the charger the orange charging LED comes on for a second and then turns off. I have ruled out the fuses and power adapter as possible causes.

I have checked the fuses with a multimeter and they seem okay. One thing that I found interesting is if i plug the DS charger in without a battery in it and place the multimeter (on short/diode test) across the battery contacts on the DS the orange LED comes on and stays on (if i reverse the +/- on the meter this doesn't work). This makes me think the battery is faulty, not the fuses, however I have two batteries and they both won't charge. Do you suggest i change the fuses anyway? if so which one is most likely to be the cause? I have some 0603 0.5A fuses, are they suitable?

SOD69 is correct. Double check the F1 and F2. Assuming your charging port is good, check E15 as well (I believe its E15, to the left of the F1. Little black box with four contacts). Check for continuity, top two contacts, then bottom two. This will also cause charging failure. Then bridge or replace as necessary.

The charging led description you have given is 90% of the time due to the fuses, I know you say you have ruled them out but I would highly suggest you check them again, unless that is the DS lite has received water damage in which case I have yet to find a solution to this other than to replace the entire motherboard.

If you are unsure of water damage open up the battery compartment and on the bottom lefthand side there is a square piece of paper, if its white with clear pink dots there is no water damage but if the dots are spreading or the square is pink then there is water damage. There is also another square on the motherboard itself located near the headphone port so please check that one too.

I'm sorry I couldn't be much more help than this.

I would recommend that you change the fuses anyway, personally I use SMD 0603 1.0A but 0.5A should be ok, some repair services use 1.0A and others use either 0.75A or 0.5A as its a matter of preferance.

Change the F1 fuse first as this is the one that controls the input power whereas F2 conrols the power to the unit from the battery.

If after changing the F1 fuse you still have the problem then change the F2 fuse too as I have found that on occasion it requires both to restore the charging capabilities.

If you dont fancy going through changing the fuses if its a possible waste of time then you can always try temporarily bridging the fuse... you can do this either with solder, a piece of wire or even metal tweezers. Give the bridging a go and if that sorts it then you know to change the fuses.

Tip- bridge the fuse prior to plugging it in as bridging after the power has been connected will give false results.

Let me know how it goes.

it sounds like it's a battery problem.

If you want to replace your battery, call Nintendo's Consumer Assistance Hotline at 1-800-255-3700 from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. Pacific Time, and order a replacement battery there. I believe it costs around US$15.00.
If you still need assistance I would suggest you check our online troubleshooting here. Depending on the specifics of your situation, the problem may be the DS Lite, the battery, or the AC adapter.

You can try buying another battery, or by buying a charging station that could just charge your battery (incase its the charger port on the ds thats broken).

The red LED indicates low power. When the DS is charging an orange LED should be on and the DS can be switched on, giving a second green light. If you tried charging it but the orange LED did not come on or only came on for a few seconds then the battery has not charged. The charger may be faulty or the power connector on the DS may be faulty. You need to try another charger. If another charger does not work then the DS is faulty and needs repair. It could be the power connector or the battery or some other fault inside.
If the amber LED comes on to indicate that the battery is charging then the battery should be fully charged within 3 hours. If the DS does not switch on after charging then the battery may be faulty. It can be removed by opening the cover on the bottom of the DS.
You should try and find a friend with a DS who will let you try their charger and battery in your DS.
If the DS itself is faulty it will probably be uneconomical to repair. If this is the case then try selling it on ebay as a faulty DS.

Ds lite suddenly stopped working

The orange light goes off when the battery has been charged to its highest capacity. After every charge, the batteries capacity is decreased. Get a new battery, that should do it.

Nintendo ds wont charge

First of all, your DS Lite is charging both ways.....with power on and without power on.
You have for almost 99% sure a blown fuse F2 on the systemboard.
If you can solder you can try to replace it with a new one but be adviced, it is tricky if you don't have the skills with soldering SMD components and it can send your DS lite to the trash.
So my advice is find someone that repair DS Lites or order a fuse on eBay and try it yourself.
