Question about Singer 1120 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

Machine has seized. Wheel will only turn a 1/4

My sewing machine has seized. The wheel will not turn. Only goes back & forth about a 1/4 of a turn. The bobbin area won't move anymore & I can't get the bobbin in. Which doesn't matter cause the machine won't work! I have taken it apart and cleaned it but did not find anything wrong with it. No lint or even string. I am a beginner sewer so I'm not sure what else to do. Please help!

Thanks for any advice! Al

Is there thread caught in the feed dogs? Something is caught somewhere in the bed of the machine. Is the bobbin case in properly? Do you have your manual? What were you doing when this first happened? Is the needle stuck in the down position? If so, loosen the screw holding the needle & pull the needle up and out. A bit more info & I may be able to help.

I have seen no thread or lint any where in the bottom or the top of the machine. I have blown it out with air and I can now move it manually but not when I plug it in. When I turn it on all I can hear is the motor humming & no movement. I'm starting to wonder if its the top where I can't get at it. I do have my manual but it doesn't really tell me anything. I have taken it apart according to it. When this 1st happened all I did was plug the machine in and it wouldn't work. I didn't even get a chance to start anything. But If I do remember correctly that last time I used this the machine was sluggish & seemed to be catching on everything. Like have the wrong needle for heavy fabrics. There was resistance but I never saw anything wrong and it was working-ish. The needle is out and I can move it manually now but it still is tough. Thanks!

How would I fix it if it is out of time? I did take the back off of the machine today to see if I could get at the top. Blew it out again with air and just generally looked around. Everything seemed fine. No lint or thread that I could see. Unless the belt is in the back of the machine.... I never noticed any belts off in the front. Thanks for your help. Your suggestions are getting me to look at it from different angles!

It's probably out of time, or a belt inside has slipped. If it's computerized..could be a card burnt out. Wish I could help more, but I don't have this machine.

Any belt would be at the back inside the machine, near the hand wheel. Some newer machines have gears instead. Usually, this happens because there is hidden thread blocking something...

I'm not sure , but by looking at the picture of your machine..it has 2 knobs near the top center...are those for choosing stitches? If so, your machine probably does not have a belt, it probably is gear driven.

Do your feed dogs move at all when you turn the wheel? Do you have a way to drop and raise the feed dogs? (the teeth that pull the fabric through the machine)...try dropping them Turn the hand wheel back and forth a few times, just about 1/4 of the way around in each direction... see if the wheel frees up any. If it does, then raise the feed dogs (push/flip the switch that lowers/raises them). Now, you may have to turn the hand wheel towards you a full turn (it may be hard to turn) as that's how my singer needs to do in order for the feed dogs to pop back up. You could even put a drop or two of oil on the feed dogs themselves...if there is an invisible (really that thread & lint can hide well) thread or lint..this should help get it out. Once the feed dogs come back up...rock the wheel several times, checking with each rocking motion to see if you can see any thread/lint.

If that does not help...you probably will have to have it cleaned and serviced. Here in Lubbock, TX it's 30.00 to have it done. Some larger cities charge a lot more...so ask first.

Hand wheel seems sluggish. Why doesn't it turn freely?

Is it a mechanical machine (not computerized)? If so, very likely needs a good cleaning and oiling. Old oil solidifies and seizes machine parts. Frequent oiling with fresh, good quality sewing machine oil (only 1-2 drops each spot where metal rubs on metal) will help keep your sewing machine healthy & happy. NO oil on cams, belts, plastic parts.

Thehook assembly will not move when you turn wheel

Could be a multitude of issues depending on your machine make & model. If it is an older mechanical machine, it most likely seized due to lack of regular cleaning and oiling. Consult the owner's manual for maintenance instructions and use ONLY fresh good quality sewing machine oil & applying only 1-2 drops of oil each spot.

You can take it for the standard sewing machine checkup service.
If you have the patience and time, you can try fixing it yourself:

In the future, be sure to clean and oil regularly (every 40 hours of sewing, every 6 months if not in use). Use ONLY fresh good quality sewing machine oil, applying 1-2 drops of oil each spot. Consult the owner's manual for instructions.
