THE HARD DRIVE WAS DAMAGED ON MY ARCHOS 504 160 GB WHEN THE BATTERY SWELLED AND PRESSED ON THE HARD DRIVE CAUSING IT TO DRAG. IS THERE A WAY TO REPLACE THE HARD DRIVE AND RESTORE THE OPERATING SYSTEM, OR DO I JUST THROW THIS UNIT AWAY?

On the Archos:
In the settings menu from the front screen, set your Archos to 'PC Hard Drive' instead of Windows Media Player. If it doesn't show as an external hard drive when you plug it into your pc, do this....
On the pc:
Go to Start\run, type diskmgmt.msc and click ok to take you into Disk Management. Your Archos should show as a drive in here and you can associate your new drive with a drive letter.
If you cannot see your Archos in this windowafter you've set it to 'PC Hard Drive' on the Archos, then you may have a dodgy usb cable.
Connect it to the USB port of the laptiop with the cable supplie with the 604. A popup will appear on the Archos screen - select the firts option. The Archos will then be visible to your laptop as an external hard drive. You can then drag files across from the Archos
Make sure your Archos is set up as a PC Hard Drive in the settings and plug it into your pc via the USB. Your pc should recognise it straight away as an external drive. You should then be able to drag and drop photos, music, avi's, flash games etc.
1st of all, your Archos needs to be set to PC Hard Drive mode in the settings. Then when you plug it into your pc, it will just show as a new drive. You can then simply drag and drop movies, music, flash games, files etc. The Archos accepts avi files with mp3 sound, however if you purchase the package which allows you to watch DVD's onthe Archos, then you also have a whole load of codec's which means it accepts Real Player files, Dolby Surround sound, you can copy 4.7 gb dvd's straight to it and much more.
In the settings menu from the front screen, set your Archos to PC Hard Drive instead of Windows Media Player. It will then just show as an external drive when you plug it into your pc and you can drag and drop files from the pc.
Press the Reset button on the inside of the unit with the battery removed. This should solve the Problem. If not you may need to send it in.
Reset button is located under the battery. So remove the battery and loo for the button at the end of the archos where the battery pins make contact. To the right of those and half way down between the pins and the case of the hard drive will be a gold round looking circuit. this is the reset. Press it and off you go.
Ribbon on hard drive came loose, take out battery. remove 2 screws on inside of battery compartment (not the ones mounting the plastic frame) remove 2 screws on side of unit(not all four, tough to get back together if you do. take ribbon and reset it into hard drive first, then unit. slide battery back on and backcover, turn on, problem sould be sovled. If not, try again the ribbon is not seated. it took me 3 or 4 times, about half an hour, with jewlers phillips-head screwdriver. my Archoes was a 604 wi-fi but it shoud work pretty much the same on 404, 504, 604, 605, 705 605 wi-fi, and 705 wi-fi.
