IBook G3 Mac Notebook..can't get online, enternal modem is idle?

My husband found an iBook G3 Mac Notebook at work and the screen was smashed. I paid to have the screan repaired, bypassed the password but when I try and get online it won't let me. It keeps telling me that the enternal modem is idle and something about the ethernet. I'm not even sure what ethernet is lol and I'm really not familiar with Mac at all. I've always used windows. Can someone please help me get this laptop up and running. I'd really love to use it. I've heard great things about Apple Notebooks, even this older model. Thanks

@macdrone thanks for replying. Is the ethernet line what you plug into the modem that looks like a phone jack only bigger? If so, I've done that. My modem is actually a router, I don't know if there is a difference, I'm not very computer savy lol when it comes to epuipment and tech. I got the router for my other laptop. I don't know if the iBook has a wireless card in it or not. Where would that go? I do know when I try and get on the internet it says 2 things, 1 "error, specified server could not be found" and 2, "could not open the communication device"...it takes me straight to the network screen and when I put in the IP address etc...it will say internal modem status: idle....I thought maybe buying a new OS would help but I'm not too sure of that now. I think the configurations is messed up and it's probably something simple to fix. I don't know but I'm open to any suggestions at this point, it's my understanding that this is a real good laptop. Thanks again.

when I checked to see what OS it was, I clicked on " About This Mac" and it told me OS X 10.2 but when I boot the computer up and on the desktop it says Mac OS 9 so I'm really unsure at this point. I'm sorry for the confusion. I feel like a real idiot when it comes to this laptop, or MAC period lol.

If it Mac OS X what to do is plug in the ethernet cable into the slot that has above it a symbol like <--> then on your macbook go to the apple menu then down to system preferences and then network click on show and select built-in ethernet and then under the TCP/IP tab configure using DHCP and then click on the apply now button at the bottom right of the network panel. Your IP address should be supplied form your ISP. If it doesn't get back to us.

Ethernet is the big phone looking connection for the network. It also has a dial up modem installed. It doesnt sound like you have a wireless card in it. You may have to buy one and have it installed to get on the net.

You need to go into control panel and choose startup and pick OS 10.2, you have a dual boot system with both OS'es. Then we can provide more help.

Ibook wont log onto my network

I ran into this with my home network and my old g3 ibook needed the older speed wifi to connect. I found my old wifi router, hooked an ethernet cable to the newer router (in a regular ethernet port) and connected the other end to the internet port on the old one... they linked and worked fine to provide wifi for the old G3's ..

Hi, Sorry you are having trouble,
Sounds to me like you're going to have to re-open that puppy and check all the connections, sometimes, when putting it back together, some cables are stretched and come un plugged...
Be careful, go slow...

Make sure you log on details are correct. Confirm the dial out credentials. The line just needs a dial tone, which you can test with a land line phone.
