That icon is the Enhanced Call Audio. It will appear when you make or received calls. There's a possibility that the phone is stucked in call state.

Press "L" three times. And that should dismiss it.

Thank you and good luck!

    Try this:

Press the BB key, select Options, General Options, and set "Enhance Handset Call Audio" to Normal.

If that did not help, remove the battery while your BlackBerry is turned ON. Leave the battery out for 5 minutes, then put it back in.

    Thank you!

sorry about this, I have turned the Enhanced Call Audio to Normal and it is still the same. I have taken the battery out twice now for 5 mins and the same....I can get icon to disappear but the same noise when I make a call as if icon still there, it has a constant click, click noise when I make or receive a call that also creates gaps and I cannot hear caller and they cannot hear me amid these gaps and click noises.

Do you have any important files in your phone? I would suggest for you to back up the files using the BlackBerry File Manager (so that you could have a copy of those important files), and then completely wipe your BlackBerry. After that, you can restore those files back to your BlackBerry.

I checked some forums that it seems that this is an on-going issue with some BlackBerries. If same problem occurs after wiping the BB, contact your wireless provider to verify the issue.

    Thank you!

Strange symbol on screen of my blackberry pearl

Generally rectangular box appears when you are in Roaming. After doing the Hardreset still if you are getting rectangular box in your handheld kindly walk into the nearest service center.
A hard reset involves physically removing the battery from the smartphone and then reinserting it. To perform a hard reset, complete the following steps:
1) Remove the battery cover from the back of the BlackBerry smartphone.
2) Remove the battery, and then reinsert it after a few seconds.
3) Replace the battery cover.
I hope I was able to help you.
Thank you for using Fixya.

Unknown icon

I had the same problem for awhile too.
The box is your call equalizer settings.  The descending line indicates "boost bass" and the ascending line indicates "boost treble"
This usually only shows when you have your BB headset connected, to change the settings:
-plug in your headset -make a call, (voice mail works good for this) -press your menu button -select "Enhance Call Audio"
-make your selection
You'll see your choice on the screen
Let me know if this helps 208E019D

Every time I make a phone call My blackberry has a strange symbol

Hi,

The icon is an indicator for the Enhance Call Audio feature selected on the device. The Enhance Call Audio feature is designed to allow a user to adjust the sound quality over the earpiece of the device (e.g. Boost Bass or Boost Treble)

callscreen.jpg

To improve sound quality for all phone calls, complete the following steps:
  1. In the Phone application, display the menu and select Options.
  2. Click General Options.
  3. Change the Enhance Handset Call Audio or Enhance Headset Call Audio field.
  4. Display the menu and select Save.
To improve sound quality during a phone call, complete the following steps:

1. During a phone call, display the menu and select Enhance Call Audio.
2. Select Boost Bass, Boost Treble or Normal.

To review the different Selectable Phone Equalizers during a phone call, press the L key. The enhancement specific icons are displayed on the active call screen.

Typing on my blackberry

It sounds like you have alt or sym function on which is turning your inputs into numbers and symbols. You will have a logo in the upper right hand corner showing you which feature is activated. Turn it off.If you are unsure what I am referring to in turn turn press ALT twice and watch the logo in the upper corner, turn it off and do the same with SYM. You should be able to use your keyboard as normal now.
