Question about GoVideo Go Video DVD/VCR Combo

3 Answers

Initializing DVD My GoVideo Combo (VR 3845)won't recognize any blank DVD to initialize it. I have used several blank DVD+R discs and it just spins and does not ask me to initialize it. It eventually ejects the disc and says it can't read the disc. I can record onto and already initialized disc and I can record to a video tape but the intialization of a new disc is not possible. Any ideas?

If you know you're using a readable disc, clearly the drive is the source of the problem. It's possible that the drive's laser has become dirty to the point that it can't read the disc. Open the drive's caddy and spray into the drive with compressed air. The blast of air should blow away any dust buildup over the laser. Pop a disc into the drive and try to read it again.

If your drive still can't read any disc, even after you clean it, the drive may have a serious problem indeed. The drive's motor may not be working properly, or the laser in the read head assembly may be malfunctioning.

1. Purchase or borrow a lens cleaner disc and try it first. You can find these things really cheap at any large department store. They usually get the job done well. However, you may need to clean the lens manually if the store-bought cleaner fails.

2. Remove the outer casing of the DVD player. Remove the screws that mount the top casing onto the bottom of the DVD player and slide the top casing off. This will expose the DVD deck, which houses the laser pickup lens.

3. Find the lens. The lens will be glass and under the DVD clamp. The lens will probably have a blue tint to it. If you are having trouble finding the lens, you could shine a light on the components and watch for the reflection.

4. Use a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe the lens. Just a quick scrub will do. Dry the laser pickup lens with the other end of the swab.

5. Give the lens a few seconds to dry and replace the covering of the DVD player. Test the efficiency of the player. If necessary, repeat the process.

Let me know if this doesn't work and we can try other options to get it working.

Thank you for using Fixya and Good luck.

The dvd wont initialize blanc discs so that i can record with it.i have used different disc as well

Do you mean it won't format/initialize the disc? Alternative possible problem, when you put in a disc, does it not recognize that a blank disc is in the unit? Only DVD-RAM discs need formatting. DVD-RW discs need to be initialized. DVD-R disc do not need either formatting or initializing. (This unit does not write to DVD+R or DVD+RW discs.)

In the case of DVD-RW discs that can't be initialized. Check if this has already been done (or if you need to unfinalize the disc).

If the new disc is not being recognized as a blank disc, the recorder may not be recognizing the disc (dirt, scratches or manufacturing issue) or the recorder is not focusing on the disc properly. In the first case, clean the disc or try a different type of disc (Samsung claims that their discs will be most compatible). In the second case, the unit may need service.

I hope this helps.

(usually tracking and focus problems will be seen on both recording and playback (even with commercial discs).)

Recording

The device defaults to initializing discs to DVD-VR format. I believe this is incompatible for all devices except other DVD recorders. You need to reinitialize the disc to DVD-R format from the menu. These should then work in other players.
