It sound like you have a valve problem some types of ignitors have a heat release valve, by hitting it you cause this to release, I would suddjest replacing the ignitor unit but this requires a Gas Fitter that is approved, as all sorts of tests, requires specialised equipment, if you have gas central heating, the service engineer could perform the same for your cooker. remember to ISOLATE MAINS POWER if this model uses it for ignition.
Hope this has been helpful

Kenmore Oven Model 278 4298891 everything appears to work but the oven turns on then a few seconds later goes off???

My daughters just experienced the same problem. I've tested what I could and only found some bad solier joints on the control board for the dial. I re soldiered the connections but still have the same problem. The temp sensor ohms at 1100 roughly and changes with temp changes. The elements pass a continuity check. The bake and broil relays seem to work fine but a few seconds after the relays close the oven just stops heating. Stumped! I guess I will look for a new control board.

Gas stove with electric ignition (oven stopped working)

the electric ignition is bad and needs replaced in oven. I had the same problem a few months ago and it was the ignitor for the oven. if replacing it yourself, be very careful with ignitor, it is very fragil. do not touch ignitor itself, hold on to it by the base of it. they are not that hard to change.

Hi,
Yes, I think that you have a problem with the ignitor on your gas range.
As crazy as it may seem the ignitor can light your oven and then the power going through it drops off too much and it will shut your gas valve off. It sits there and goes crazy trying to relight all the time and never gets your oven hot. Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't... Drove me nuts the first time my own oven did that a few years back.

Here is a tip that will help explain it also. At the bottom of that tip there is also a tip on how to buy partson line.

Magic chef oven/stove top range not staying hot

Hi, It very well could be the ignitor. Sometimes they work at first and then will not open the gas valve later in cycle. You can set the oven to heat and watch the ignitor. If it glows and the gas will not ignite in 30 to 45 seconds, the igniter is getting weak. I jope this helps.
Please let me know if I can assit you further.

Maytag gas oven cycles every 20 seconds

yes it is normal . but i know your not the first to think its not , todays ovens are so tight , it only takes 10 seconds of heat to keep them at proper temp . it used to be that ovens where kept at a 3 degree sweep that is set at 350 turn on and up to 353 then off ,cool down to 350 and back on . this was a longer time off and a longer time on topday we keep to 1 degree ! 350 on to 351 off to 350 on and so on ....... so short berst of heat make for a more even oven ........ but i know i hate it too ! good luck
