When you are booting the system are you pressing F12 to get to the boot menu or are you trying to boot from the ROM via the BIOS settings.

Also what disk are you trying to boot from.

I am trying to boot from BIOS.
I have reinitialized the virtual disk and that looks "OK"
I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 64bit disk in the drive, but cannot get the bios to boot from the drive.

I guess I am a little confussed do you have the Windows Server CD in the actual ROM drive or are you trying to boot from a virtual drive.

    Hello ISSKEN,

I have the actual DVD in the drive. The 2950 has the PERC5i RAID controller and 4 physical disks in RAID 0, so it appears as one logical drive to the OS.

Four days ago, I was successful at installing Windows 7 64bit "OS", and during that install; Win7 downloaded a new driver for the RAID card....and I think my trouble lies there. I am going to try and make the Dell firmware and Driver floppies and go from there....

Any advice you have will definitely keep me sane over the weekend!!

    Best Regards,

    Jim

Yea that could be the issue especially if you have any older Firmware installed with the PERC 5i.

Note in regards to the firmware and drive update check if you change the operating system over to Windows Server 2008 x64 you can download the Update Package for Microsoft® Windows® to install the firmware and drivers from Windows instead of having to use a floopy disk.

Let me know if you have any more questions

Hello,

You may have a damaged hard drive and it needs to be replaced. If the system is still under warranty, Dell will replace the drive free, you just need to go online, supply your systems tag number and follow the instructions from there. If you have just the one drive, you will need to restore the information froma a backup. If you have a RAID set up, once the hard drive is reinstalled, the RAID will sync the drive to the others.

Good Luck

My dvd rom will not read my iso image cd for a boot. but it will read factory made cd.. help i need to update my raid controler i have at dell 2950 server running MS2003

If you have a spare USB flash drive lying around, you could try using http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ with the ISO image. Then, hit F11 while the 2950 is booting and you should be able to select the flash drive.

If that doesn't work, see if you can find updated firmware for your DVD-ROM on http://support.dell.com or if it's an aftermarket install go to the OEM's support site.

Failing that, maybe try different media. If you're burning to a CD-R, try a different brand (and avoid CD-RW discs.) If you're using a DVD-R, try a DVD+R.

Good luck!

Hi,
Your system comes with on-board diagnostics. Run the diagnostics to check if the problem is with the drive or windows.

To run the diagnostics follow the steps below
1. Shutdown the system
2. Press the Fn+Power button together
3. The screen will display color screens
4. Follow the prompts until it takes you to advanced diagnostics
5. Do a custom test on the optical drive.

If you are unable to run the diagnostics
1. Find the dell resource cd that came with the system
2. Insert the cd in and restart the computer
3. At the Dell logo screen press the f12 slowly 5 times
4. Select boot from cd/dvd drive
5. Press any key to boot from cd .... message appears press enter
6. If the system starts from the cd .. this would mean the drive is ok

pOst back what were the diagnosis
Thanks

Windows - Delayed Write Failed

This points out to a problem with one of your hard drives. Run CHKDSK on all drives you have, & if any problems are detected on any drive, run CHKDSK /F on that drive.
