Question about Canon PowerShot SD630 Digital ELPH / IXUS 65 Digital Camera
The most likely cause (if the lens is clean) is that the focusing ring has jammed or is sticking due to dust, or it has become dislodged, and isn't moving. The focusing ring has tiny electromagnets on it, and it rotates as signals from the microprocessor control it. You can try a couple of things to fix it. First thing, is to spray some compressed air into the front lens area. This will often dislodge any dirt or sand that may have worked it's way inside. If that doesn't help, lay the camera on a towel or soft cloth, on the LCD side, with the lens facing up. Hold the camera firmly, and tap it gently with your palm of your hand somewhere where there aren't any switches. What we're hoping for here, is to jar the focusing ring, and make it reseat itself. Try it 2 or 3 times, then take a pictures, and check to see if the focus is restored. This method seems to work about 50% of the time, but if it doesn't, service will be required. There is a possibility that the ribbon connector from the focusing ring to the cpu board has become slightly ajar, and to reseat it, the camera will have to be disassembled. The lens assembly can be expensive to fix, laborwise, so make sure you get an estimate before having it serviced, if all else fails. Sometimes the cost of a new camera on sale is less than the cost of repair. Good luck, hope this helps.
