Question about Buffalo Technology 320GB MINISTATION TURBO USB 2.0 5400 RPM PORTABLE HDD Hard Drive

I have a 500GB unit - my computer, running Windows

I have a 500GB unit - Buffalo MiniStation -  my computer, running Windows 2000 quit recognizing the drive. My computer at work, running XP recognized it fine. I called the Buffalo tech support and the guy said the problem was with the pc but he had no suggestions as to how to solve it. It worked fine for 18months - every once in a while the computer would not recognize the drive, but all I had to do was plug it into the compter a second time. Note: I have always had to use the usb 2.0 cable PLUS a USB-DS Power Supply Cable to get it to work with the machine running Windows 2000 blut now it doesn't recognize the drive.Any way to fix this?

The problem is that when the MiniStation is hooked up via the usb cable and ubs-ds supply cable, the unit does show up in device manager, but not as Hard Drive G as it should but as "usb device" with no drivers installed. And as far as I can tell, there are no drivers to install on the pc to manage the drive. Apparently the drive installs itself each time it is connected to a computer and powers up. The tech at Buffalo tech support suggested that maybe the usb ports were not giving the drive enough juice - maybe, he speculated, I needed a new power supply. Apparently the computer has to provide a threshold of power to spin the discs fast enough, that's why on older computers you have to use the USB-ds supply cable along with the usb 2.0 cable to provide the extra jolt of power. But the idea of a new power supply? I have no indication whatsoever that the power supply is failing - is there any way to test?
At any rate, the take-away is that whatever drivers there are are internal to the drive and not evident in device manager - I only wish there was a driver I could install that would fix the problem. The Buffalo tech said no.

you can check voltage at each connector with a volt meter. they can be purchased at radio shack cheaply. check to see if all connectors have the same voltage. output levels should be marked on the power supply. you are looking for dc voltages. good luck

There is a possibility that your hard drive has experienced logical damage due to your hard drive is not visible. In this case to recover your data i would suggest you to use some data recovery software that will get online in both free and paid version.

There is nothing you can do: that little fall has destroyed the hard disk's reading heads. This unit is dead, time for a new one.

recording from an external hard-disk to a DMR Dear Sir or Madam, I have just purchased the DMR-BST835EG Blu-Ray Recorder, which has many attractive features. In fact, I also recommended this product to a friend of mine. My prime intention is to transfer some Internet downloaded .MKV-HD and .MP4-HD movies, presently stored on a Buffalo USB-powered external hard-disk, onto the Panasonic recorder's internal (1TB) hard-disk. However, after registering the said USB-HDD on the DMR, its driver is no longer recognized on my computer...and it has to be re-formatted via the PC, with the result that the Blu-Ray recorder again refuses to copy video files from it. What can I do? This article (the DMR) was purchased, for over EUR 600, from EBay, mainly for the above-stated purpose, repeat: copying the HD films, presently kept on external hard-disks, onto the Panasonic recorder (so as to transfer the files onto Blu-Ray discs later on). Please treat as urgent, as I would like to start using the Panasonic article accordingly, and my friend also needs this information before buying the DMR-BST835EG (too). I earnestly await your reply. Thanks in anticipation for your time and attention. Best regards, Ivan Micallef P.S.: Is there some firmware update which could enable the USB-HDD >> HDD (1 Terabyte) recording ? This is an option which should be possible, also according to the DMR's "Copy Video" menu. ; According to various website blogs, many other clients are facing the same problem - what we are askingfor is for the elimination of the USB-HDD registration request. ; Preferably, the external hard-disk accepted/recognized by the Panasonic DMR should remain in the NTFS format and not changed to the FAT32 system. Thanks again.
