Cannot receive faxes on Canon Pixma MX870, but can send faxes

I have a new canon pixma mx870 allinone printer and am having problems setting up the machine to receive faxes. It will send faxes with no problem. When I try to receive a fax, the machine doesn't even recognize that a fax is being sent to it. The machine doesn't ring.

- I have been through the manual 3 times and made sure all the settings were set as recommended.
-I have tested the telephone line and it works fine.
-I have tryed changing modes from fax only to fax priority.
-I checked the telephone line connection and made sure it was plugged into 'L'. (I do not need to use a telephone on this line)
-I have tested sending a fax, and can
-I have reduced the RX speed to 7200.

Nothing I try even will get the machine to ring. I previously had a pixma mx850 and had the same problem. I need some new things to try.

I was searching for an answer to this to make sure my new MX870 is correctly set to receive faxes. Here's one answer I came across:

First set Tel-Priority, turn off incoming ring, turn on manual/auto switch, then check how many seconds it takes for your answering machine to come on, and set it a couple of seconds after that. This should do the trick.

I spent about 30 minutes trying to get my fax to AUTO ANSWER and was finally left with call ATT your voltage is weak. I asked for Canon level 2 tech and was told there is no level 2. The tech never thought or knew to check this setting which was OFF on my mx780 out of the box.

So thanks JeffW99 and phooey to Canon support.

There is also a setting for the ring pattern that the unit uses to identify a fax. Set it to match the incoming ring.

EX: I have a single line and hook up the printer only when I am expecting a fax. I had to change the setting from double ring to NORMAL before it would pick up.

Canon mx 410 fax answers voice calls

I have an MX870 with the same problem - fax picks up during a voice call and I can no longer hear the caller. As with everyone else, the problem is intermittent and not replicable.
I have tried tel priority mode and fax priority mode (from the phone/paper submenu under physical Fax button) and all the various RX receive setting under Fax Settings submenu of the physical Settings button.
But I have a new possible solution. I only use the fax for outgoing -- for some time now I have been using K7.net for incoming faxes which delivers faxes to my email. That way I have a dedicated fax number, never miss an incoming fax while on the phone, and I have all faxes in electronic form as well.
So, my new idea was to set the MX870 to DRPD (distinctive ring pattern) receive mode (from the phone/paper submenu under physical Fax button). Since my phone service through Xfinity/Comcast does not offer DRPD, I am hoping that the MX870 will NEVER pick up a fax.
I will keep you posted as to whether this works.

I WANT TO PRINT FROM MY MX 870 AND IT WANTS TO SEND A FAX INSTEAD

I had this problem too. I discovered that my printer, with it's regular picture, had somehow been renamed as a Canon PIXMA Wireless Fax even though I already had it listed. Not only that, my Canon wireless printer was no longer listed. I deleted the new fax that was also listed as my default printer, and searched for my printer. I made it my default printer again and all worked as it should. I have a feeling this is happening with the latest driver updates.

I had the same problem and just fixed it by opening the Canon IJ Network Utilities and using the tool menu. It turned out that the printer had changed ports and the port was not compatible. That meant that the port it was using didn't have a printer driver associated with it so it couldn't work. As soon as I went into the configure menu and had it try the next IP port, it immediately printed. It's a matter of finding the correct port again or associate the driver the port you are now using.

Canon PIXMA MX870 Wireless Printer works with Snow Leopard OS?

The MX870 is compatible with Mac OS X, all versions. I think the CD that comes with the unit will have the Mac Snow Leopard drivers on it, but if not you will be able to download them here.
