SOURCE: Forerunner 305

Had identical problem (incredibly frustrating, glad I didn't have the heart rate monitor attached !) I did the following to resolve the issue :-

. Uninstalled the GTC
. Reinstalled it from the supplied disk
. Updated the Forerunner with the latest v2.8 software and GPS v3.00 from the Garmin website.
. Updated the Garmin USB drivers
. Updated the GTC with the :-
Training Center For Windows software version 3.3.2 as of November 7, 2007

This was on the Garmin site :-

Still early days, however the PC and forerunner are at least talking to each other :-)

Will it start up whilst in the cradle, charging?

Mine did, but will not charge up off the cradle. Turned out to be a duff battery/connections due to water getting into the device!

SOURCE: My Garmin forerunner 305 will not turn on.

I have had the same problem. To fix it, I simultaneously hold down the "mode" and "reset" buttons for about 10 seconds. After releasing the buttons I power it up as normal. This has worked both times it has happened, and I got this fix from the Garmin website. My mileage totals are still in the history.

SOURCE: change Battery in garmin forerunner

Might not be the battery. My wife's was always powering off during runs. Then it would not power on at all. There was a connection inside that wasn't making contact. But first First try cleaning the 4 brass connection tabs on the watch and check your charger to make sure the tabs are raised and not squished. Second try to reset the unit. Hit mode reset and power buttons all at the same time. Hold these for 3 seconds and then release. If these do not work here is what I did. There are no screws holding the unit together. I used a exacto blade to very carefully pry the unit apart along the side seam. It's not easy to do. Be very cautious and gentle. Work the thickness of the blade into the joint to gently wedge apart. You are not trying to remove material! Once apart you will see some brass fingers that make a connection between the upper and lower part of the unit. This is where the problem was with my wife's 305. I gently raised these tabs to make a better connection, It's been working ever since. I didn't try it before but try pressing very hard on the unit where it says Forerunner 305. The case is very hard so it might not work. But if it powers up when pushing you found your problem. Hope this helps. Here is a link I found on opening a 205 (Same process) To put the unit back together use Automotive silicon/gasket maker.Use a tooth pick to put a VERY small amount of silicon around the entire seam. Put the two half's together and wrap tightly with electrical tape. Test the unit immediately to see if it powers on and off. If it does not open it back up and raise the small prongs more that make the connection from the bottom half to the top half. If any silicon squishes out the sides wipe with water and a rag.Let the unit sit over night. In the morning remove the tape.

Opening forerunner 305

I have a problem with my 305 whereby the mode button stopped working so semi pulled mine apart.

If you look at the 305 from the side you can see where the rubber bit covers the buttons. The bottom of the rubber bit is attached to the rear of the forerunner - don't try to detach it - I munted mine a bit detaching it. At the top of the rubber, nearest the face you'll see a small gap. Follow the gap anti clockwise from the power button down to bottom left corner of the face near where the wrist strap pin is. Here you'll see the gap is plastic on plastic on plastic. I believe a thumbnail or similar in here and worked around carefully will let you pry the face off. I stuck my thumbnail in there and got the face to lift 1-2mm before I backed off. Note I didn't go any further than that.

For my problem by the time I had munted the rubber cover and was able to operate the mode button with a paperclip I new it was dead so didn't bother going any further as I could still use the 305 in reduced mode without mode changing.

Garmin 305

I think that you have got a loose connection on the battery. I had the same problem, took the top off and had a poor connection on one of the battery terminals.

Any jolt would cause it to shut down.

Should be a simple fix if you don't mind going inside!

Garmin Forerunner 305 usb cable won't be read

The problem is probably not with the USB cable if the GPS wont even turn on. The older firmware of the Forerunner 205 and 305 have a problem with locking up. This causes the Forerunner to look completely dead. There is a reset procedure: push the mode and reset button at the same time and then let go and hit the power on button. If it powers on that is the problem. Go to the Garmin site and load the newest rev. of firmware into the Forerunner. Fixed mine and a few friends with the same problem.

I do however have a cable problem. Sometimes my PC will come up with unrecognized USB device and my 305 wont talk to the PC, it does charge. It is the cable or dock for sure, because I have tried a different cable/dock and the 305 has no problem. This is the reason I ended up here. I hope the lock fix works for those with the above problem.
