I have had my IlO for several years. the only writable disk it will take is Maxell. I have gone through several brand of writtable DVDs Does any one else have this problem? Or am I going to have to put all these Cases of DVDss on ebay? I have had this problem of finding compatible disks since the day I brought it home.

Your dvd writer is bad, because there is not enough air in side the box. it over heated, the fan inside is not big enough. you are one of the lucky ones, if yours even lasted a year. i had 4 go bad on me in six mouths returned to walmart and replaced them.open up your box and unplug the strap from the player and the power line from the back of the dvd recorder. if you have a computor the power and strap hook up the same.way. what you need to do, is order a dvd recorder on- line,a 8 speed and 20 speed will not work. it has to be a 16 speed dvd recorder.and a dual layer chould help. i got mine from sams it was a 16 speed LG internal super multi dvd/cd rewriter, but i think all they carry now is a 20 speed.if you get one, i would just leave the old one in ilo. and do a little carving on the back of the ilo caseing to run the strap and power cord through and ontop of the ilo. just sit the new recorder on top of the ilo it may not look good sitting there but it will last a lot longer that way i went through about 200 different brands of dvds before i found out what was wrong with mine good luck i hope you get it fixed. e-mail me if you have any quistens.thanks ronpar

I noted an earlier solution that involved replacement of the DVD writer drive which I agree with. Just wanted to give you another tested alternative for a replacement drive.

LITEON 22x Internal DVD / CD Writer drive from WalMart for $39 bucks. (bar code is 44149 00406). Suppose you could install it external as previously suggested (I know several speak of lots of heat in these units but I have never had these problems although I bought mine when ILO discontinued these so perhaps they resolved in later models?) With some work, it will fit inside and look just like the original. Bit of an art getting everything to fit but works great. Make sure you set new drive to MASTER as it comes as slave in box.

BTW this drive works in both the DVDRH04 the the DVDR04 as I have both and replaced both drives... one because it did not always close the DVD tray and the other one for only creating DVD's it could read (no other player could read them). New drives work great on both models, all speeds playing, recording and initializing/finalizing. Hope this helps!

Just a note that if you wish to play commercial DVD's in the new 22x
player I referenced, you will first need to install it in a PC and play
at least part of a DVD so that it's region code will be
    initialized/set.

The symptoms of "no region code" is the DVD will not play at all or it
will lock at, or soon after, the copyright screens. Kind of a pain but
looks like the ilo does not have the ability to set the new drives
code. You should note that a re-load of the ilo's firmware does not
solve this problem... a PC is your only option.

I have an ilo dvd ro4 and when I put a disc in it says invalid disc

Laser is either dirty or starting to wear out.It may also not be a compatible disc, not all brands of discs work in this model. The unit records on R+Rw+ discs 4x speed or slower.Variable speed discs1x-16x will also work.
Most of the time it is just a dirty laser that can read the disc,to clean laser use a commercial laser cleaning disc,Phillips and Maxell work well in this model.Put a drop of rubbing alcohol on cleaning brushes.

http://www.retrevo.com/support/CyberHome-DVR-1600MU-DVD-Players-manual/id/534ci862/t/2/e this is as close as I have found. Different brand names but basically the same. If you are copying home movies use the av outputs from the vcr to the av inputs of the vcr, then the av outputs of the ILO to the tv - while recording from your tapes. I read somewhere if it is macrovision protected you can bypass it by using the coax out from your vcr to the Antenna in on the ILO and then pick up that signal in your TUNER of the ILO. I have had good success with both, I prefer the av if I can get that to work, better picture, but sometimes it won't record that way, esp old tapes, so try the ant in (coax) if the av doesn't work. Use + R discs or +RW discs (sony brand is the best +R but it doesn't matter on the +RW's)

Are you sure these disks are DVD+R and+RW.
Could be as simple as a dirty or dusty lens on the laser, especially if there are smokers in the house

iLO DVDR05. iLo is Wal-Mart?s ?store brand?; the DVDR05 is actually the same as a CyberHome DVR 1600 Cyberhome and iLo are up for same, so their website has been taken down with basically a "For Sale" sign in its place. I hope that helps you a little. I will see if I can find a download of the manual for either of these branded devices.

Ilo-DVDR04 recorder problems

The laser is either dirty or is starting to go.These lasers in this model usually only last two years. To clean but a commercial disc cleaner philips or Maxell work good in this model.Put a drop of rubbing alcohol on brushes this helps clean laser.I would do this every 15 hours of use .The best way to clean laser is to rub gently with a Qtip soaked in rubbing alcohol but this requires some technical knowledge for you have to open burner. If you attempt this make certain electrical plug is pulled lasers cause nasty burns.
If laser is going you can replace the burner/loader unit, this model uses a 411s or 451s Liteon burner. The 401s and 813s will also work without problem.
